There is no need to wait for December to enjoy a little festive anticipation. Yorkshire’s country houses are beginning their seasonal transformations, independent makers are setting out their wares, and illuminated gardens and town-centre artworks are making the most of the darker evenings. A warm coat and a little space in the diary can lead to some very different adventures.
If Christmas still feels a little way off, there is plenty here for you too. Film festivals, live music, comedy and temporary exhibitions bring fresh ideas to a city day out, while hands-on workshops offer the satisfaction of making something yourself. Things to do in North Yorkshire in November
North Yorkshire moves between two very different sorts of imagination this month: independent films and comic-book worlds, then grand houses filled with festive storytelling. There are markets to browse, garden lights to follow and a fireworks evening to enjoy before Christmas takes over the calendar.

Dark Skies Fringe Festival
The Dark Skies Fringe Festival invites you to discover the breathtaking beauty of the North York Moors after sunset. This much-loved event celebrates one of the world’s few International Dark Sky Reserves, offering the perfect setting to enjoy the wonders of the night sky. From guided stargazing sessions to astronomy talks and family-friendly night walks, you’ll find plenty of ways to explore the heavens above.

Whitby Goth Weekend: Bizarre Bazaar
Whitby’s alternative community brings a distinctive flourish to the coast, and the Bizarre Bazaar is a good place to explore its creative side. More than a hundred indoor stalls make up the official trading areas, with browsing at the heart of this part of Goth Weekend.
The final day of the autumn gathering falls into this month, giving you one last opportunity to enjoy the market’s unusual mix. The gathering’s community spirit is part of its character. If you are hoping to photograph someone’s carefully assembled outfit, asking first is a small courtesy that matters.

Race Across the World: The Experience York
Turn York’s historic centre into a self-guided race course inspired by the BBC series. Teams solve clues and complete challenges between The Shambles and Coppergate, covering roughly 2.5 to 3.75 kilometres at their own pace over two to three hours.
Families with children old enough to enjoy the clues, couples and groups of friends can all set their own pace. Team pricing starts with two players, and every team needs at least one adult aged 18 or over.
Because the challenge unfolds outdoors on foot, allow for the weather as well as the distance. Step-free and dog-friendly route options are available, with the booking details providing the best route for individual access needs.

Pickering Firework Spectacular
Country music gives Pickering’s pyromusical a playful twist, with country costumes encouraged and radio hosts joining the evening’s entertainment. You can bring a picnic or browse the food village before the display, with a funfair and bar adding to the outing.
There’s also a drive-in option if you’d rather watch from your vehicle or beside it. Every occupant still needs admission as well as the parking permit.
Drive-in vehicles must stay until the display ends unless stewards arrange an emergency departure. Bring a torch and sturdy footwear for potentially muddy ground.

Halloween at Mother Shipton’s Cave
A woodland outing beside the Nidd gets a witchy makeover at Mother Shipton’s Cave. Hocus Pocus-inspired characters and displays bring a gentle Halloween theme to a visit that also includes the cave and Petrifying Well.
You get more than a decorated photo stop here, with the heritage attraction forming the heart of the day. Choose a timed car or pedestrian ticket to match how you’re arriving.
The full route isn’t step-free: three sets of steps are not wheelchair accessible. Pushchairs must be left before them.

Bonfire Night at Sandburn Hall
Fireworks set to music are the centrepiece of Sandburn Hall’s evening, with fire performers adding another burst of spectacle on the ground. An amusement fair and food and drink stalls fill out the programme around the display.
This has the ingredients for a proper autumn evening out: a little browsing, something to eat and a shared pause to watch the sky. I like the combination of a focused display and extra entertainment, particularly for families who want to make an evening of it.

Aesthetica Short Film Festival
A cinema seat can take you a surprisingly long way, and Aesthetica’s independent films promise plenty of journeys beyond the familiar. York becomes a meeting place for filmmakers and curious audiences, with short films, features and creative conversations spread across the city.
The programme stretches beyond the screen into virtual reality, games and podcasting, so there is room to follow a new interest between screenings. I like the freedom to dip into a single film or build a more ambitious festival day, with workshops and masterclasses adding another layer for anyone curious about how stories are made.

Winter Owl Evenings
Torchlight, a hot meal and owls flying in the darkness make this a rather different kind of November evening. At the National Centre for Birds of Prey, you can join a guided aviary walk, see smaller owls flying indoors and watch the larger birds at the woodland flying ground.
The included meal turns it into an evening to savour rather than a quick wildlife stop. You could explore Helmsley during daylight before making the birds your evening’s main event.
The venue recommends ages 8+, wrap up warmly and bring a torch for the outdoors. Weather can affect an outdoor display, so check the venue’s advice before travelling.

Scarborough Lights

The organiser has confirmed a programme of light-based family activities, while the finer details of individual installations are still being released. That leaves plenty to anticipate, especially if you enjoy seeing a familiar seaside town take on a different character once the daylight fades.

Alpine chalets bring crafts, gifts and food to Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square. A Dickens of a Christmas at Castle Howard
Scrooge’s world takes shape inside Castle Howard’s grand rooms, where Dickens-inspired storytelling meets projections, sound and theatrical surprises. The pleasure is in moving from one richly imagined space to the next, with the house itself lending scale and atmosphere to the story.
There is something particularly appealing about a festive outing that gives you both an indoor spectacle and room to wander afterwards. Garden access is included with the house experience, so the visit can unfold at a gentler pace beyond the decorated rooms. Father Christmas experiences are booked separately.

The Polar Express Train Ride at Wensleydale Railway

There is plenty of charm in the invitation to arrive in pyjamas and settle into the story together. Thought Bubble Comic Convention
The people behind the comics take centre stage at Thought Bubble, where hundreds of artists and writers gather with their work. It is a chance to discover an unfamiliar illustration style, talk to a creator or find a small-press comic that might never cross your path on a high-street shelf.
Guest appearances, signings, talks and workshops give the convention plenty of movement beyond the exhibitor tables. A dedicated children’s zone adds creative activities for younger visitors, while the focus on making and sharing comics gives the whole weekend a strong artistic thread.

Christmas at York Castle Museum
Kirkgate’s recreated Victorian street provides a lovely setting for a Christmas outing with a historical twist. Decorations are joined by a programme of carol singers and characters, so you can choose a day that matches the experience you’d most enjoy.
November Saturdays feature carol singers, Sundays from the 15th bring Green Father Christmas, and Fridays from the 20th feature Scrooge. These daytime activities are included in museum admission, unlike separately priced workshops and evening performances.

The Wreckers at Carlton Towers
Two friends, a cottage on a tidal peninsula and a wrecking legend set the scene for Tom Needham’s ghost story. Clap Trap Theatre brings the fictional suspense to Carlton Towers, giving you an indoor alternative to November’s outdoor scares and light trails.
The two-act performance makes a defined evening out, with a bar open during the event. It’s recommended for ages 12+, so keep this one for older children and adults who enjoy a theatrical chill rather than a gentle family activity.

Ripon Cathedral Christmas Food & Gift Fair
More than a hundred stalls fill Ripon Cathedral with gifts, food and drink, giving Christmas shopping a rather lovely backdrop. Among so many makers and producers, there is scope for both a thoughtful present and something tempting to bring home for yourself.
I’m drawn to fairs where browsing feels like part of the outing, and the cathedral setting adds that extra sense of occasion. The proceeds also support the cathedral’s work and conservation, giving this festive gathering a connection to the building’s future as well as its history.

RHS Glow at Harlow Carr
Harlow Carr’s Winter Walk joins the Glow route for the first time, opening up another part of the garden after dark. Illuminated trees, light-and-sound artworks and eight new installations mark the trail’s anniversary, with the interactive Common Ground piece among the additions.
A familiar garden can feel wonderfully different when the borders disappear into the darkness and the trees become the stars. This is an evening for wrapping up, slowing down and enjoying those changing views, with the garden’s own shape and planting providing the setting for the lights.
Hannah’s Highlight: The illuminated light trail, with its purple trees, blue hedgerows, and pink borders, feels like stepping into a dream. Unlike other festive light trails, Glow lets nature shine without the distraction of music or flashy displays. It’s a peaceful, reflective journey that showcases the garden’s beauty in a whole new light. Perfect for unwinding and soaking in the serene atmosphere during the hectic holiday season! North Yorkshire Moors Railway Santa Express
Santa, elves and a Gingerbread Man theme join a one-hour return journey from Pickering to Levisham. Each child receives a plush toy and book, with station games and activities adding to the visit.
For families who love a railway adventure, the train ride gives this Santa outing its own character. Allow extra time at Pickering for the station activities, and calculate the per-person fares rather than assuming adults travel free.

York Minster Christmas Tree Festival
One hundred individually themed Christmas trees fill spaces including the Nave, Chapter House and Lady Chapel. Local schools, businesses and charities decorate them, giving you plenty of small details to enjoy within the medieval cathedral.
The festival adds a seasonal layer to a sightseeing visit without a separate festival charge. Eligible York residents can enter free with proof, but it isn’t universally free; check sightseeing hours around worship, and note that some trees use flashing lights.

Leeds International Film Festival
The 40th Leeds International Film Festival brings a fresh reason to settle into a cinema and let someone else choose the direction of travel. Independent and international films fill the programme, with screenings spread across the city and surrounding festival venues.
There is pleasure in taking a chance on a film you know very little about, then carrying the conversation into the rest of the evening. Single screenings make a small taste possible, while shareable passes leave room for a more adventurous selection. The different strands and screening types give film fans plenty to explore.

Magic at the Mansion at Harewood House
A magical spell has stirred Harewood’s treasures into life, bringing immersive characters and handcrafted decorations to the State Floor. Studio McGuire returns with new installations in every room, making the house itself part of the festive storytelling.
The appeal is in the smaller discoveries as much as the grand setting: a detail that catches your eye, a character that makes you smile, another room to explore. Time in the gardens and grounds can sit around the timed house visit, giving the day a balance of indoor imagination and fresh air.
Hannah’s Highlight: Christmas at Harewood has become one of my favourite festive traditions. On my previous visit, the enormous pink ballerina tree and Delft-inspired room were particular favourites. Those belonged to an earlier theme, but my Christmas at Harewood review gives you a taste of the imagination that makes me keen to return.

Steve McQueen: Resistance
A century of protest comes into focus through photographs in Steve McQueen’s Resistance. From the suffrage movement to the anti-Iraq War demonstration, the exhibition considers the people who pushed for change and the images that helped their stories travel.
Archive material and photographs made before digital cameras became commonplace give the subject a tangible, human scale. This promises a thoughtful gallery visit, with room to reflect on how a picture can both record an event and influence what happens next. It adds a substantial new exhibition to a city-centre afternoon.

World Pianist Weekender
Making a thumb piano, listening to a popup performance and joining a choir workshop all belong to the same musical weekend at Leeds City Museum. The programme brings hands-on creativity into the main hall alongside opportunities to hear pianists at work.
There is a lovely sense of participation here, from the open mic to the premiere of new pieces by composition students. Families can spend time at the craft activities, while anyone who enjoys a group sing can join the community choir session without previous rehearsal. A little musical curiosity is a good starting point.

The Sharing of Diwali at East Riddlesden Hall
The Sharing of Diwali at East Riddlesden Hall brings five days of colourful celebrations to this historic National Trust property near Keighley. Working with Bradford Hindu Council and local community groups, the event celebrates the Festival of Lights through music, storytelling and creativity.
Explore the 17th-century manor house decorated for Diwali, with vibrant displays bringing its traditions and stories to life. Families can enjoy puppet shows, traditional live music, lantern-making workshops and fascinating talks about South Asian textiles. There are also opportunities to learn more about the cultural significance of Diwali through family storytelling and hands-on activities.
The weekend evenings offer something particularly special, as illuminated displays transform the grounds and reflect across the pond. Visitors can join lantern parades accompanied by traditional dhol drummers, creating a memorable celebration of light and community.

Forever After Christmas Markets at Nostell
Nostell’s Stables Courtyard and Riding School welcome local makers for the Forever After Christmas Markets. Among the stalls are handcrafted gifts, bread, chocolate, bath products and children’s clothes, bringing everyday treats and present ideas together.
The scale feels approachable, with more than thirty makers to explore rather than an enormous shopping hall to navigate. It is a pleasant reason to spend time in the courtyard and discover a small business along the way. A thoughtfully chosen handmade present can be a lovely reminder of the outing.

All the materials are supplied, and both beginners and experienced crafters are welcome. I like the idea of stepping away from ready-made decorations for a while and learning how a simple material can become a seasonal centrepiece. The Lady Isabella Room provides a calm setting for concentrating on the making.

Light Up Wakefield

As darkness falls, the countdown begins for the spectacular switch-on moment, bringing warmth and sparkle to every high street. The Piece Hall Christmas Markets
The Piece Hall’s courtyard fills with independent makers for a long run of festive market weekends. Homeware, jewellery, gifts and food provide plenty to browse, all gathered within one of Halifax’s most distinctive spaces.
This is the sort of outing I would keep fairly unhurried, leaving room for an unexpected stall rather than arriving with every purchase decided. The mix of practical presents and small treats makes that approach especially tempting. With several weekends to choose from, there is flexibility to fit a visit around the rest of the month.

Caphouse Light Up Festival
Community stories become a projection and soundscape at Caphouse Light Up, created by Fabric Lenny and Nick Lewis with local contributors. The mining museum provides an evocative setting for a celebration built around light, creativity and the people nearby.
Lantern making and a parade give visitors a part in the gathering, while brass music, living history and a fire artist bring different textures to the programme. That combination of shared making and live performance is especially appealing for a family evening, with plenty to notice around the main artwork.

A coastal walk, a jazz concert and an unruly comedy show keep East Yorkshire’s November interesting before the festive theatre and decorated houses arrive. There is also a gentle museum activity for little ones, plus opportunities to browse local makers or sit down to some Christmas crafting.

Spurn’s Wild Wander
Bird migration, shifting land and stories of a town lost to the sea all meet on Spurn’s Wild Wander. A guide leads the way from the Discovery Centre, drawing connections between the peninsula’s wildlife, conservation and remarkable human history.
Lighthouses and lifeboats are part of the story, with plenty of stops during the walk to take in the surroundings. It is an appealing introduction for anyone curious about what makes this narrow stretch of coast so unusual. Uneven ground and cliff steps make it a more demanding choice for small children.
Hannah’s Highlight: Spurn is one of my favourite places on the East Yorkshire coast because its landscape feels so unusual. Driffield Firework Spectacular
The Driffield Firework Spectacular is set to light up the skies above East Yorkshire once again, bringing a night of dazzling displays and family entertainment to Driffield Showground. This much-loved annual event promises an unforgettable evening filled with fireworks, live music, and festive fun for all ages. Whether you’re heading down with friends or family, you’ll find plenty to keep everyone entertained before the main display begins.
You can enjoy delicious bites from the Food Village, take a spin at the funfair, or join in with interactive audience activities hosted by local radio presenters. The atmosphere builds throughout the evening before the main event, a breathtaking firework display that will illuminate the showground in spectacular style.

International Idiots Live
Puppets, props and physical absurdity power Gary and James’s International Idiots Live. The duo’s slapstick style brings a deliberately unruly edge to Hull Comedy Festival, with audience involvement woven into the performance.
This is a choice for anyone who enjoys visual comedy and the feeling that a scene could take a ridiculous turn at any moment. The Godber Studio setting puts the action close at hand, and the recommended audience age is sixteen and above. A lively alternative to a more conventional stand-up evening.

Tiny Treasures: Building

Zoe Rahman Trio: Hull Suite Live
Hull’s relationship with the sea runs through Zoe Rahman’s Hull Suite, alongside ideas of voyage, migration and family history. Hearing the music in the city that helped inspire it adds a particularly fitting dimension to this trio performance.
Rahman is joined by bassist Alec Dankworth and drummer Gene Calderazzo for the concert. For listeners who enjoy music with a sense of place, this is an intriguing way into the jazz festival: personal stories and local inspiration carried through the interplay of three musicians.

Christmas at Burton Agnes Hall
Flowers and foliage from the walled garden find a second life inside Burton Agnes Hall, becoming part of its handmade Christmas decorations. Paper, card and other reused materials add to the displays, giving the rooms an appealingly crafted character.
Outside, a trail of giant carved candy canes turns the woodland into a festive search, while the indoor snowman hunt gives younger visitors another detail to spot. The combination of decorated rooms and outdoor exploring makes a nicely varied visit, with space to move between the house and grounds.

Twas the Night Before Christmas at Burton Constable
Victorian Christmas Eve is quietly unfolding at Burton Constable, where the ground-floor rooms suggest a household preparing for its midnight feast. Wrapped gifts, ribbons and historical displays set the scene, while a story guide follows the watchful housekeeper, Mrs Styche.
Children have a new festive dog trail to follow, and the Chapel’s Memory Tree creates a more reflective stop along the way. I’m drawn to this glimpse of preparations and traditions behind the celebration. The seasonal visit focuses on the decorated ground floor while the upstairs rooms undergo winter conservation.

Drewton’s Christmas Craft & Food Festival
More than thirty local food producers and craftspeople gather on the Drewton Estate for this festive fair. There is plenty of promise for a delicious find or a present with a local connection.
The gathering supports Teenage Cancer Trust and Castle Hill Hospital’s WISHH Charity, adding a community purpose to the browsing. I’d leave a little space in the shopping bag for an unplanned treat.

Sledmere Christmas Fair
Local makers and producers fill Sledmere’s Christmas Fair with food, drink and handmade gifts. It is a tempting opportunity to gather a few festive supplies while meeting the people behind them, with the estate adding a countryside setting to the shopping.
Parkland and walled garden access are included, so there is room for a walk as well as a browse. A contribution from each ticket supports charity, and a Christmas Shop voucher adds another small extra. The mix of stalls and outdoor space gives the visit a pleasing change of pace.

The Wind in the Willows at Hull Truck Theatre
Toad’s latest obsession sets a riverbank adventure in motion as Mole, Rat and their friends try to rescue Toad Hall. Hull Truck’s adaptation brings Kenneth Grahame’s characters to the stage with original music and inventive theatrical touches.
There is plenty of scope for warmth and mischief in this familiar friendship story, especially with Badger and Otter joining the efforts against the Wild Wooders. Recommended for children aged seven and above, it is a festive theatre option for families ready for a shared adventure with a little more story to follow.

Peddler Market Bonfire Weekend Special
Peddler Market Sheffield is back at Peddler Warehouse, bringing the city’s best-loved mix of street food, craft drinks, and creative traders. You can expect an energetic atmosphere as local and national food vendors come together under one roof.
Alongside the food, there’s plenty more to enjoy. Independent makers and creators fill the market stalls, offering everything from handcrafted candles to bold laser-cut designs. Whether you’re after art prints, jewellery, or artisan chocolate, there’s always something unique to discover. With live music and entertainment on the way, the November edition promises another weekend of great food, community spirit, and creative energy.

Linocut Printing with James Green
A photograph, sketch or other visual idea can become a linocut print with guidance from Sheffield artist James Green. The workshop follows the process from composing an image to cutting the lino safely and producing a one-colour print to take home.
No previous experience is needed, and materials are supplied, leaving you free to concentrate on the satisfying changes between drawing, carving and printing. For older teenagers and adults who enjoy making things, it is a chance to spend proper time with a new technique under an experienced printmaker’s guidance.

Goldsmiths North at Wentworth Woodhouse

The setting gives the fair a sense of occasion, and included house and garden access adds more to explore beyond the display tables. I’d enjoy comparing the details of individual pieces before taking time in the surrounding rooms. Re-entry over the event weekend also leaves room for a second look.
Hannah’s Highlight: My Hidden Tour visit gave me time to explore and ask questions, and the State Rooms showed me another side of this enormous house. Elsecar Christmas Makers Market
Elsecar’s Christmas Makers Market brings independent traders and artisan food and drink together beneath one roof. Handmade gifts give the browsing a personal feel, with a chance to find something a little different from the usual shopping-centre selection.
The heritage centre adds character to the outing without turning it into a complicated day to organise. I like the ease of a market you can explore at your own pace, pausing wherever something catches your attention. Festive treats sit alongside the present ideas, so a little shopping for yourself would be understandable too.

Kelham Makes: Festive Wreath Making

Kelham Island Museum adds atmosphere to the making, while hot drinks and mince pies bring the seasonal comforts. All abilities are welcome, so the pleasure is in trying the techniques and finding your own combination of foliage and finishing details. No two wreaths need to turn out the same.

A Christmas Carol with Gerald Dickens
Gerald Dickens brings a family connection to the telling of A Christmas Carol: he is Charles Dickens’s great-great-grandson. His performance places the familiar festive ghost story inside Wentworth Woodhouse’s Low Drawing Room, where the historic setting can do some atmospheric work of its own.
The appeal here is a focused evening of storytelling, with Scrooge’s transformation at its heart. For anyone who enjoys the literary side of Christmas, the combination of performer, story and room is a strong draw. The bar opens before the performance, though food is not served.

Barnsley Bright Nights
