Things to do in North Yorkshire for Christmas

York Christmas Market

York’s alpine chalets bring seasonal shopping into Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square. More than four-fifths of the traders are from Yorkshire, giving the market a strong local connection alongside its festive food and gifts. It’s a useful stop if you want Christmas shopping to feel like an outing in its own right.

The market has a weekly rest day this season, which makes its opening pattern worth checking before setting off. Once you’re there, the central location leaves plenty of scope to wander between the stalls and York’s surrounding streets, rather than making one hurried lap of the chalets.

I love the idea of following a story from room to room in such a grand setting.

The gardens are included with the house experience, so there’s room to add a winter wander to your outing. This is a different theme from previous Christmas events at Castle Howard, with its own characters and scenes to discover.

A Christmas Tail: The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse brings Fairfax House’s festive mice back to Georgian York. Inspired by Aesop’s fable, the story follows country mice discovering the temptations and surprises of city life. Lavish greenery and decorations transform the townhouse while the mice explore feasts, fashion, shopping and a grand ball.

Hundreds of bespoke mice are hidden throughout the rooms, each wearing an outfit hand-stitched by Fairfax House volunteers. You can follow their adventures and discover how the country cousins handle the excitement of Georgian city life. Keep an eye out for tiny characters among the displays, as spotting their antics is part of the experience.

Christmas at York Castle Museum

Kirkgate becomes a Victorian Christmas Eve at York Castle Museum, with seasonal decorations bringing another layer of life to the recreated street. A Father Christmas dressed in green is among the characters in the programme, drawing on an older festive tradition rather than the familiar red suit.

Carols, character encounters and a one-man Scrooge performance take place on selected dates. They don’t all run every day, so the experience changes with the programme. The decorated street gives the visit its setting, while the performances add stories and voices to the museum’s festive season.

Sleeping Beauty at Harrogate Theatre

Princess Aurora has a very unwelcome christening guest in Harrogate Theatre’s Sleeping Beauty. Carabosse’s curse sets up a race to prevent a spinning-wheel disaster, bringing a familiar fairytale to the theatre’s own Christmas pantomime. David Bown writes the production, with Marcus Romer directing.

There are relaxed, captioned, signed and audio-described performances within the programme, giving visitors different ways to experience the show. The theatre also has four-seat boxes, although these are a separate booking option and can have restricted views. For a traditional Christmas theatre outing in Harrogate, this is one to have on your list.

RHS Glow at Harlow Carr

Harlow Carr’s Winter Walk joins the illuminated route for the first time as Glow celebrates its tenth anniversary. Among eight new installations is Common Ground, a sound-responsive sculpture stretching across the garden. The combination of winter planting, colour and sound gives this year’s trail a very different perspective on familiar paths.

I would leave plenty of time to pause along the route rather than rushing from one display to the next. The garden setting is central to the experience, with installations placed among the plants and landscape instead of a single indoor Christmas display. Along the trail, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to warm up with festive food and drink. Indulge in mulled wine or hot chocolate from Betty’s Teahouse, enjoy Bratwurst and jacket potatoes at The Harrogate Arms, or toast marshmallows over an open fire. Before heading home, stop by the RHS Garden Centre to browse beautiful decorations, Christmas gifts and seasonal plants to bring a little glow to your own home.

NYMR Santa Express

Santa comes to your seat on the NYMR’s return journey between Pickering and Levisham. His elves bring songs, games and a Gingerbread Man story, with the slightly accident-prone Gingersnap puppet adding to the fun. The ride lasts around an hour, giving the festive performance a proper railway adventure of its own.

Each child receives a gingerbread man plush toy and a festive book. Back on the platform, the Naughty or Nice Scanner, games and letter-writing station carry the story beyond the carriage. I’d allow time for those station activities as well as the train journey.

Christmas at Mother Shipton’s invites you to step into a world of festive wonder and timeless magic. As you wander through the ancient woodland, twinkling lights guide your way towards the enchanting Christmas Village. You’ll be greeted by Santa’s merry elves, ready to fill your visit with laughter, festive crafts, and warm holiday cheer. Every child with a Santa Experience Ticket receives a special activity pack and the chance to meet Santa in his cosy grotto, an experience sure to create magical memories for the whole family.

Beyond the Christmas festivities, you can explore the wonders of the Petrifying Well, the Wishing Well, and Mother Shipton’s Cave, all steeped in centuries of Yorkshire folklore. Christmas at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal

A Dickens-inspired Christmas reaches from Fountains Hall into the abbey grounds, with decorated rooms and an outdoor clue trail to explore. It brings a story-led element to a winter visit, alongside the stone arches and water-garden landscape that make this estate such a memorable place for a walk.

Music adds another layer on selected days, with choirs performing in the cellarium. Candlelight carols in the church are a separate, ticketed event, so they aren’t automatically part of every visit. I like that there are several ways to enjoy the season here, depending on whether you fancy a trail, music or both.

York Minster Christmas Tree Festival

Local schools, charities and businesses put their own stamp on Christmas at York Minster’s tree festival. Around a hundred decorated trees fill the setting with different colours, messages and themes, making this much more than one carefully coordinated Christmas display.

There is also an opportunity to leave a prayer or message on a tag. I like the community thread running through this event: each tree represents a different group, with its own reason for taking part. The festival is included in sightseeing admission, so it can form part of a wider look around the Minster.

Christmas at The Dreamery Gardens

Christmas at The Dreamery Gardens and Museum offers an enchanting experience unlike any other. Dressed in green and crowned in ivy, he embodies the spirit of the old Father Christmas, reminding you of a time when winter meant fireside tales and festive wonder.

Puss in Boots at Stephen Joseph Theatre

A talking cat changes Sam’s fortunes in Stephen Joseph Theatre’s Christmas production of Puss in Boots. Set in the fictional Scarbarocia, the story brings troublesome sisters, songs and a resourceful feline into Nick Lane’s adaptation of the Charles Perrault tale.

The show is staged in The Round, putting the action in the centre of the audience. That arrangement gives this Scarborough Christmas outing a different feel from a large, end-on pantomime. I’m drawn to the combination of a familiar fairytale and a setting with its own local wink, rather than simply another retelling in an unnamed kingdom.

West Yorkshire brings animated mansion rooms, two contrasting Worth Valley train experiences and plenty of theatre to the Christmas calendar. I’ve also included brass music over dinner, carols among abbey ruins and festive shopping in the Piece Hall courtyard.

Magic at the Mansion at Harewood House

Harewood’s State Floor becomes a world of animated objects and unexpected movement in Magic at the Mansion. Studio McGuire return for a third collaboration with the house, using their projection-based storytelling to give the rooms a new festive personality.

The installations are spread through the mansion, with surprises built around its interiors rather than a single Christmas scene. Grounds and gardens are included in the visit too, giving you space to add a walk before or after your house slot. This year’s production is a fresh programme, so previous Christmas themes won’t tell the whole story of what’s waiting inside.

Beyond the grandeur of the State Floor, there’s plenty more to enjoy. From crisp winter walks around the stunning estate to a browse in the Christmas shop, Harewood offers a truly magical day out for all ages.

Christmas returns to The Piece Hall in Halifax for another magical festive season. This much-loved market transforms the iconic courtyard into a winter wonderland, packed with twinkling lights, cosy stalls, and the joyful sounds of the holidays. You can browse a carefully curated selection of stalls featuring some of Yorkshire’s most talented independent producers and artisan makers.

From handcrafted homeware and jewellery to unique gifts and festive treats, there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for a thoughtful present or something special for yourself, you’ll find plenty of inspiration as you wander through the stalls. You can also sample delicious seasonal food and drink, perfect for warming up as you soak in the festive atmosphere.

With live music, festive decorations, and a charming historic setting, The Piece Hall Christmas Market is the perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit. It’s an unmissable festive experience for visitors of all ages and a brilliant way to support local makers and enjoy one of Yorkshire’s most beautiful landmarks.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical

Max the dog helps tell the story of the Grinch’s attempt to steal Christmas from Who-ville. Leeds Playhouse brings the musical to its stage with Tom Wright directing, turning the familiar green character’s plans into a Christmas theatre outing full of songs and storytelling.

The production runs for around ninety minutes and has an age recommendation of four and over. That gives it a different shape from a long pantomime, while still offering a substantial festive show. The central question remains a lovely one for Christmas: what happens when the trappings of the celebration disappear?

The Christmas Experience at Lotherton

A toy-inspired Twelve Days Walk leads the outdoor Christmas programme at Lotherton. The installations turn familiar festive ideas into playful stops around the estate, while the Edwardian Hall provides an indoor change of scene with its Christmas decorations.

The Fairy Dell and woodland walks add more to explore beyond the main trail. Santa experiences are booked separately, so an estate visit and a meeting with Father Christmas are different choices. I like the mix here: you can build an outing around the decorated house and outdoor discoveries, then add a Santa session if that’s part of your Christmas plans.

Christmas at Whistlestop Valley bring several festive railway adventures to Clayton West throughout the season. You can choose from Steam into Christmas, the Santa Express, Festive Friday and a dedicated SEND Santa service.

The Santa Express includes a steam train ride to Shelley North Pole, where children meet Father Christmas in his grotto. Families can also enjoy Spike the Elf’s Christmas show, make reindeer food, post letters and visit the Wishing Tree. Festive Friday offers a similar journey without the magic show, while SEND Santa provides a calmer, lower-capacity experience.

Steam into Christmas opens the season with Santa’s arrival, festive lights, unlimited rides and a one-to-one visit. First Class Christmas upgrades are also available on selected Santa Express and Festive Friday services. These include priority grotto access, a family Polaroid, craft packs, festive cookie decorating and extra carriage touches.

Saltaire Living Advent Calendar

The Saltaire Living Advent Calendar brings festive magic to the historic village of Saltaire once again. Since 2006, this much-loved community tradition has illuminated the village’s streets, with beautifully decorated windows revealed daily in the countdown to Christmas. This year, 46 windows will sparkle across homes, businesses, and community buildings, each offering a unique creative surprise that captures the joy of the season.

You can follow the trail through Saltaire’s charming streets or explore it virtually using the interactive online map. Every evening, a new window is revealed at 4pm, showcasing imaginative designs ranging from traditional Christmas scenes to contemporary art inspired by the creators’ lives and local culture. For those unable to visit in person, the event’s global online following continues to grow, with each window’s unveiling shared on the event’s website and social media pages.

The Saltaire Living Advent Calendar celebrates community spirit, creativity, and the festive warmth that makes Saltaire such a special place during winter. Whether you stroll through the village or join from afar, you’ll experience the wonder of Christmas in true Yorkshire style.

A Christmas Carol on the Worth Valley Railway

Scrooge’s story starts in his office before continuing aboard a Worth Valley train. Past, present and future become part of the journey, giving A Christmas Carol a railway setting as the familiar ghost story unfolds around the passengers.

This is aimed at visitors aged eight and over, with ghosts, loud sounds and flashing effects contributing to the atmosphere. It’s a separate experience from the railway’s Elf Explorer, with a more dramatic Christmas story at its heart. I would choose between them according to whether you want a Santa adventure or an evening with Dickens’ reluctant festive hero.

There is time to browse the YSP shop as part of the evening too. For me, the appeal is the combination of familiar brass-band warmth and a meal in the sculpture park setting. It adds a dining option to this roundup for anyone whose ideal Christmas plan involves good company around a table.

Santa joins passengers on Middleton Railway’s return journey, bringing a gift for children along the way. The visit also includes a grotto photo opportunity, so the festive experience carries on after the train has returned to the station.

Grumble Bear and Penny add stories and craft activities to the programme, with refreshments included too. The railway setting keeps the train itself at the centre of the outing, while those extra activities give you a reason to linger. It’s a Christmas option in Leeds with a very different feel from a large estate light trail.

The Pantomime Adventures of Peter Pan

Billy Pearce returns to the Alhambra as Smee, joined by Myra DuBois as Magical MerMyra and Ryan Thomas as Captain Hook. The Pantomime Adventures of Peter Pan sends the Neverland characters on a quest to help Peter fly again, with pirates and a crocodile among the obstacles.

The cast gives this Bradford production a character of its own, even if Peter Pan is already a familiar Christmas choice. Relaxed performances are included in the wider run, with adapted sound and lighting and a more flexible auditorium atmosphere. I would use the individual performance information to choose the version of the outing that works best for you.

East Yorkshire’s historic houses have several different stories to tell, from a Victorian Christmas Eve to fairytales and a new Tudor-inspired light trail. Santa experiences, Hull’s Christmas shows and Beverley’s community celebrations round out the region’s festive plans.

Here is my roundup of the best events in East Yorkshire for Christmas 2026.

Christmas at Burton Agnes Hall

Christmas at Burton Agnes Hall is a celebration of festive creativity and tradition. Each year, the stately home is transformed with stunning handmade decorations crafted from flowers and foliage gathered from the estate’s own walled garden. Every room glows with twinkling lights and roaring fires, creating a warm and enchanting atmosphere that perfectly captures the spirit of the season.

The seasonal discoveries continue outdoors, where twenty-four giant carved and painted candy canes form part of the woodland walk. I like the way the indoor decorations and outdoor search complement one another here. It’s a chance to enjoy the craft in the house, then add a winter wander with another set of details to find.

Twas the Night Before Christmas at Burton Constable

An 1850s Christmas Eve unfolds across the ground floor of Burton Constable Hall. Housekeeper Mrs Styche helps tell the story through an accompanying booklet, connecting the decorated rooms to the preparations and traditions of a Victorian household.

A festive dog clue trail adds something to seek out, while the Chapel’s Memory Tree provides a quieter stop. The upstairs rooms are closed for this experience, so the focus stays on the ground-floor Christmas setting. This is a daytime house visit, with a different programme from the estate’s separately ticketed evening Winterlight trail.

Fairytales at Christmas at Sewerby Hall

Fairytales provide the inspiration for Sewerby Hall’s Christmas rooms, with decorations and a house trail bringing the theme through the building. The trail gives visitors details to look for as they explore, adding a story-led element to a winter visit by the coast.

There are house-only and combined house-and-zoo admission options, so you can choose how much to include in the outing. I like having a decorated-house option that can be kept fairly focused, rather than automatically committing to a full estate day. The Christmas programme has its own opening pattern, separate from the wider grounds.

Mole, Rat, Badger and Otter come together to save Toad Hall in Hull Truck’s Christmas telling of The Wind in the Willows. Mark Powell adapts the story, with Mark Babych directing and new music helping bring the riverside characters onto the stage.

The production is recommended for ages seven and over, making it a different choice from the venue’s shows for very young children. For me, the attraction is the combination of a familiar friendship story and a Christmas rescue. It adds a substantial theatre option to the East Yorkshire calendar alongside the pantomimes and Santa visits.

William’s Den Christmas Experience

Father and Mother Christmas welcome visitors into the Lodge at William’s Den, with a family photo and a token for the Toy Shop as part of the experience. Children choose their gift, while gingerbread decorating and a live Christmas Show add more stops to the adventure.

Letter writing, a marshmallow treat and all-day play round out the included programme. The giant snow globe and teddy workshop are optional extras rather than standard inclusions. I like that the festive visit can sit within a longer play day, giving everyone time to enjoy the Den beyond the Lodge appointment.

Burton Constable’s architecture becomes part of an evening light experience inspired by its Tudor roots. Gold, crimson and purple projections bring an Elizabethan palette to the hall and grounds, placing the building itself at the centre of the display.

Timed evening entry gives the trail a different atmosphere from a daytime house visit. The illuminated outdoor setting is the main attraction, rather than a tour of the Christmas rooms inside. I’m drawn to the use of the hall’s own history as inspiration: it gives the colours and projections a connection to the place around them.

Beverley Minster Christmas Tree Festival

More than a hundred and fifty real Christmas trees fill Beverley Minster’s festival. Local groups sponsor and decorate them individually, bringing different ideas, colours and messages into the church rather than one shared decorative scheme.

Two late-opening evenings add another way to experience the displays. I would take time to look at the individual themes, because the community involvement is a large part of the appeal. This is a different event from Beverley’s town festival, although the overlapping programme creates an opportunity to enjoy both during the same outing.

Sledmere’s Magical Santa Experience

Sledmere’s Magical Santa Experience brings festive magic to life in the heart of East Yorkshire. This enchanting, actor-led journey takes you through Mrs Claus’ cosy kitchen and the beautifully decorated hall before meeting Santa himself in his snug study. Families can enjoy sing-alongs, festive games, and the joy of seeing little faces light up as they tell Santa what’s on their wish list.

You’ll then head to the Elf Toy Shop, where every child can pick their own special present, before hopping aboard the festive tractor ride to visit Sledmere’s magnificent herd of Red Deer. Keep your eyes peeled, you might even spot Rudolph waiting for his big night! The experience also includes full-day access to Sledmere’s Parkland, Walled Garden, Rare Breed Farm Park, and Adventure Play Area, offering plenty of festive fun for all ages.

Peter Pan has lost the ability to fly in Hull New Theatre’s Neverland adventure. Brendan Cole plays Captain Hook, with Jennie Dale as the Magical Mermaid, Phil Walker as Smee and Jack Land Noble as Mrs Smee joining the quest.

That cast gives Hull’s pantomime its own line-up, separate from the Bradford production of the same title. The familiar characters provide plenty of scope for pirates, plotting and a journey back towards Christmas cheer. If a big theatre outing is part of your festive traditions, this brings the Neverland story to Hull’s city-centre stage.

Beverley Festival of Christmas

The Beverley Festival of Christmas transforms the historic town of Beverley into a festive wonderland each December. You can explore over 120 charming stalls filled with gifts, crafts, and delicious seasonal treats, perfect for ticking off your Christmas shopping list. From handmade decorations to tempting food and drink, every corner captures the spirit of a traditional Yorkshire Christmas.

You’ll also find plenty to keep the whole family entertained. Santa and his reindeer will make a special appearance, while traditional Victorian fairground rides and live performances add to the cheerful atmosphere. Expect the sounds of brass bands, the sight of beautifully decorated stalls, and the scent of roasting chestnuts drifting through the crisp winter air.

This much-loved festival continues to celebrate Beverley’s community spirit. Established in 1995 by local shop owner John Bird, the event still honours his legacy with the annual best-dressed stall award. Things to do in South Yorkshire for Christmas

A Wonderland house adventure, Arctic lanterns and two distinct Cannon Hall Santa experiences lead the South Yorkshire selection. There are also Christmas stories on stage, cathedral crafts and markets that bring the season into Sheffield’s streets and industrial heritage.

Here is my roundup of the best events in South Yorkshire for Christmas 2026.

Sheffield Christmas Market

Sheffield’s Christmas market spreads through several city-centre streets and squares, with food cabins, gift stalls and festive attractions along the way. The Alpine Lodge provides a place to pause, while the Big Wheel offers a different view over the seasonal activity.

The carousel and Santa’s grotto are part of the family area at Barker’s Pool, with separate charges for attractions. This is an outing you can shape around browsing, food or a ride rather than a single timed experience. I would make space for a wander between the different areas instead of treating it as one small cluster of stalls.

This is an evening trail, with daytime wildlife admission sold separately. That distinction is useful when planning whether you want the lights alone or a longer day at the park. The lantern setting puts glowing characters and scenes along the route, offering a different sort of Christmas walk from a decorated stately home or garden projection trail.

Gerald Dickens performs his great-great-grandfather’s A Christmas Carol in Wentworth Woodhouse’s Low Drawing Room. The family connection and the room setting give this telling of Scrooge’s transformation a particularly close link to the original story.

This is a performance-led evening, separate from the house’s Alice-themed Christmas experience. A bar is available, although food isn’t included. I like the idea of settling into one room for Dickens’ story after all the bustle of larger festive trails: the focus here is firmly on the performer, the characters and the tale.

The Doncaster starting point adds a local connection to a well-known pantomime story. As an in-house Christmas production, it also brings a different theatre team’s version of the tale to this roundup. If a festive show is part of your annual plans, this gives you a Doncaster option without needing to travel to one of Yorkshire’s larger cities.

The Reindeer Rangers and real reindeer add another chapter, with farm admission included for the rest of the day. Optional activities such as the VR experience and marshmallow toasting carry extra charges. I’d leave room in the plan for the farm itself, as the Santa appointment is only one part of what’s included.

Live actors join the experience on peak dates, while dressing up and games are part of the wider programme. That means the precise visit changes with the session you choose. The house’s scale gives this story plenty of room to unfold, creating a festive outing with a fairytale twist.

Beyond the main event, Wentworth Woodhouse offers a complete festive day out. Enjoy a hot chocolate in the Butler’s Pantry Café, browse the gift shop for a keepsake, or indulge in a Festive Afternoon Tea in The Long Gallery.

Inside the museum, the River Don Engine runs on the hour, connecting the festive event to Sheffield’s industrial story. The Music Hall stage adds performances to the shopping, with rides and other activities charged separately. It’s the blend of Christmas market and working museum that makes this a particularly distinctive shopping stop.

Live carols are part of the programme too, giving the visit a musical thread alongside the hands-on stops. Around forty Christmas trees contribute to the displays. For me, the combination of a city-centre cathedral and creative activities makes this a useful choice when you want a festive outing with several things to explore under one roof.

A Very Victorian Christmas at Cannon Hall Museum

The nursery maid introduces a Victorian Christmas story at Cannon Hall Museum before children meet Santa and receive a gift. Traditional toys help set the scene, giving the grotto a connection to the historic house around it.

The experience lasts around half an hour, with relaxed sessions also included in the programme. This is the museum’s event, separate from the Santa experience at neighbouring Cannon Hall Farm. I like the smaller, story-led approach here, especially for a Christmas outing where the house’s history is part of the appeal.
