There are many Bonfire Night events in Yorkshire each year to take you pick from. In this guide I’ve listed the top events happening this year, so you can easily choose which ones you want to visit.
No matter where you are in the region, you’re sure to have a spectacular Bonfire Night in Yorkshire!
History of Bonfire Night
Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Night is celebrated annually throughout the UK on the 5th November. The date marks the anniversary of the gun powder plot, when a group of Catholic plotters attempted to assassinate Protestant king James I by exploding the House of Lords.
The occasion takes its name from Guy Fawkes, one of the conspirators who was arrested while guarding the explosives.
People celebrated the fact the King survived by lighting bonfires, which is a tradition that continues today. Some people also choose to burn effigies or ‘Guys’ on the bonfires. Firework displays are a more modern way to mark the date.
History of Bonfire Night in Yorkshire
Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Day is especially relevant within Yorkshire. Afterall, Guy Fawkes was a Yorkshireman!
He was born in Stonegate in York in 1570. In fact, the location of his family home now serves as an Inn that is named after the infamous plotter. So, if you’re looking for a unique way to celebrate Bonfire Night in Yorkshire, book your bonfire night stay at The Guy Fawkes Inn here.
At the age of eight, Guy’s father died, and his mother remarried Denis Bainbridge of Scotton, Harrogate. As a result, the family relocated to the village of Scotton, where you can trace Guy’s footsteps today.
If you visit the village that shaped Guy’s formative years, be sure to dine at The Guy Fawkes Arms in Scotton. This cosy country pub was originally constructed in the 17th century. Today, it serves a delicious menu of roast dinners, burgers, pies, and fish, as well as vegetarian and vegan options, plus moreish desserts.
