History of Bonfire Night

Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Night is celebrated annually throughout the UK on the 5th November. The date marks the anniversary of the gun powder plot, when a group of Catholic plotters attempted to assassinate Protestant king James I by exploding the House of Lords.

The occasion takes its name from Guy Fawkes, one of the conspirators who was arrested while guarding the explosives.

People celebrated the fact the King survived by lighting bonfires, which is a tradition that continues today. Some people also choose to burn effigies or ‘Guys’ on the bonfires. Firework displays are a more modern way to mark the date.

Soak up live music in the Secret Garden family bar. You can opt for the Prosecco Terrace, an adults-only space with acoustic sets and bubbles. Roaming fire performers and stilt walkers add surprise moments throughout the park. A dedicated Sparkler Zone lets you enjoy sparklers safely on site.

Little ones are also covered with comedy magic, circus skills, and a lively mini disco. Food and drink stalls serve hearty favourites and sweet treats across the venue.

Filey Lions Bonfire and Fireworks Spectacular

Toffee apples, a bonfire and fireworks in a coastal town make a cheerful combination at Filey’s Lions Club bonfire spectacular. Food and drink stalls give you something to tuck into while you wait, and admission is free!

I’d put this on the shortlist if you’re looking for a great family outing. The Bonfire will be lit at 6pm and the Fireworks will start at 7pm, so arrive with plenty of time.

York Firework Spectacular

Have you ever watched fireworks from your car? York’s Firework Spectacular has a drive-in option, alongside general admission and access to food vendors and live entertainment. It gives you a different way to spend the evening, in the comfort of your warm car.

And if you want to come by foot, you still can! General admission will involve a walk over potentially uneven or muddy ground, so I’d recommend wearing sturdy outdoor footwear.

If you decide to enjoy the display from your car, you will need to purchase tickets for everyone. You will be parked facing the displays and can view from your car, or the space beside your car.

Two displays give you a choice at Sledmere. The earlier low-noise fireworks are designed as a gentler option and are not set to music, while the later main display uses an Ibiza-anthems soundtrack. Low noise does not mean silent, and the wider event still includes music, crowds, a bonfire and fairground sounds.

Fairground rides, food outlets and roaming performers fill the gaps between displays. Use the official advance booking route and, if you’re driving, the dedicated event entrance and postcode YO25 3XS, not the usual Sledmere House entrance.

The event takes place in open fields, so sturdy footwear is sensible, and rides depend on the weather and ground conditions. Accessible portaloos are available near the main arena, with a carer discount by application. Pets, personal fireworks, sparklers, glass and your own alcohol are not permitted.
