Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience

Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience is an art exhibition with a twist. The exhibition delves into the life and work of Van Gogh. But unlike traditional art exhibitions, this one immerses you right into the artwork.

Through intelligent projection mapping, Van Gogh’s work comes to life on the walls of St Mary’s Church, and it places you at the centre of the masterpieces. The projection lasts around 35 minutes and is played on a continuous loop.

There are also other activities including the opportunity to colour your own Van Gogh and to explore the artist’s life in a virtual reality experience (additional charge applies). This is one event you really don’t want to miss!

Hannah’s Highlight: The projections, quotes and powerful soundtrack bring this masterpiece to life in a way I have never experienced before. Through seven distinct family narratives, you will experience the deeply personal impact of a system that separated parents, children, and spouses during their most vulnerable moments. The exhibition’s compelling audio design, created by Ben Pugh, features performances by local actors, including members of the Ripon Workhouse Players. The result is an engaging and thought-provoking journey through history.

York Book Fair

No booklover will be able to resist the lure of York Book Fair. It is Britain’s largest antiquarian book fair and gives bibliophiles an opportunity to admire first-hand a unique collection of antique, rare and collectable titles.

With thousands of books from over one hundred dealers, you can find titles to suit all tastes and price points. There is lots of free parking available plus a cafe on site. There is also a free bus service running from the Memorial Gardens for anyone who is traveling to York via train.

The event is hosted across just one floor so is easily accessible.

The Dark Skies Night Hikes are guided walks that take place over the winter months, when the Yorkshire Dales National Park becomes a Dark Sky Reserve. This means that the area has exceptionally low light pollution and offers stunning views of the Milky Way, constellations, planets and meteors.

You will be led by Mark Reid, a very experienced Mountain Leader who knows the Yorkshire Dales extremely well!

The Night Hikes are suitable for anyone with a moderate level of fitness and a sense of adventure. They are between 5 and 8 miles long, and cover various terrains, such as fields, moorland, riversides and hills.

The walks end at a cosy village pub, where you can warm up and share your impressions over a drink.

Burns Night Supper at Carlton Towers

This January you can celebrate Burns Night in true 19th century style. Soak up the heat from the roaring fire and the sound of bagpipes as you dine in the Carlton Tower State Rooms.

  3. The Van Gogh exhibition looks so cool – I was supposed to go to it in NZ but we went into lockdown right as it was happening at the other end of the island. Hopefully I’ll get to see it one day. Such a lot of cool things going on in Yorkshire – I’ve recently been hearing rave reviews about York, so I’m thinking I might have to pay a visit.

  4. So many great offerings. My daughter lives in a complex that currently houses the Van Gogh exhibit in Colorado. It is always busy with people attending. I love that the Beethoven’s Fifth performance is so reasonably priced.

    • We’re definitely lucky to have so many great things to do in Yorkshire in January! I’d definitely be heading to Art in a Box if I were more artistic! Sadly my painting skills are seriously lacking which is a shame as it sounds like such a fun day! I’m with you on the haggis though, I’m not sure I fancy that!
