Christmas at Castle Howard 2023

In 2023, Christmas at Castle Howard is taking on the theme ‘Christmas in Neverland.’

Transforming into J M Barrie’s fantasy wonderland, Castle Howard delves into the world of fairies, pirates, and mermaids as they bring you a Christmas experience like no other.

Meet the timeless characters of Peter Pan. Expect to be enchanted by theatrical installations and projections that bring to life your favourite moments in the story as the sounds of Lost Boys’ food fights and cannon balls and sword fights echo through the great halls via state-of-the-art soundscapes.

It is sure to be a magical and memorable Christmas event in Yorkshire that you don’t want to miss!

Christmas in Neverland

To give you a flavour of what is in store, here is a review of the 2023 event at Castle Howard, Christmas in Neverland.

With a sprinkle of Fairy dust, Christmas at Castle Howard takes visitors to the magical world of Neverland. This classic fantasy world is the perfect place for a Christmas setting. But before you can celebrate, you need to escape the clutches of Captain Hook.

Peter Pan and Neverland

Peter Pan is a popular children’s book written by J. M. Barrie. The story invites the reader into the magical world of Neverland to meet the characters who live within it and where you can stay a child forever.

Castle Howard uses the classic story as the inspiration for their Christmas event. Join Peter, Wendy, Michael, and John and they fly from the Darling’s festive London home and head for the “second star to the right, and straight on till morning.”

Neverland is a world where you never have to grow up. It is a world of food fights, mermaid lagoons, and pirate ships. Can the children defeat pirate Captain Hook? You will need to follow them through the house to find out!

Enjoy Peter Pan at Home

In case you can’t make it to Christmas in Neverland, you can bring a bit of Neverland to your own house through the magic of the books and movies here:

Peter Pan Books

Get the Peter Pan book here in either hardback book format which makes a great gift, or a paperback version here.

Peter Pan Movies

If you would prefer to experience Neverland via the screen, the story has been adapted into several movies.

Here are a few of my favourites available to buy or rent on Amazon Prime Video:

  • Peter Pan (1953) – The classic Walt Disney animation we all know and love
  • Peter Pan (2003) – One of the very first live action adaptations of Peter Pan starring Jeremy Sumpter, Rachel Hurd-Wood, and Jason Isaacs
  • Hook (1991) – An adult Peter Pan returns to Neverland to save his children from the formidable Captain Hook starring Robin Williams.

Your Journey into Neverland

The 2023 Christmas at Castle Howard celebration follows the story of the Darling children as they discover the magical world of Neverland. Here is a sneak peek of the adventure visitors embarked upon.

The Darling Home

The journey to Neverland starts in the real world. After being swept up the grand staircase, you can admire the home of the Darling children. These exquisite rooms are extravagantly decked for the festive season, and you can admire them in all their grandeur.

First up is Mrs Darling’s sewing room, which is nestled inside Lady Georgiana’s Bedroom. This glamourous bedroom once belonged to the Countess of Carlisle but has been transformed into busy workstation while Mrs Darling sews decorations for the tree.

Next up is Lady Georgiana’s Dressing Room. In here, observe bath time for Nana, the family Newfoundland dog. Keep an eye out for the crocodile, mermaid, and pirate ship toys!

Christmas at Castle Howard - Christmas in Neverland 5

You will find the Darling children’s day nursery in the Castle Howard Dresing Room. The children have been busy making paperchains for weeks and they are starting to pile up!

Inside the Castle Howard Bedroom, the children finally meet Peter Pan himself. He has misplaced his shadow, and Tinkerbell is hiding in the doll’s house! This is the final room before the children burst out through the window and fly to Neverland!

Through the Window

From the bedrooms, pass through the China Landing and out of the window. Follow the children as they fly above the streets of London towards the “second star on the right and straight on till morning.”

Stroll through the Antique passage which is adorned with spectacular star and bird decorations hanging from the ceiling. As you enter the Great Hall you will encounter Castle Howard’s famous Christmas tree and catch your first glimpse of Neverland.

This colourful world is full of fun, games, and adventure! If you look up, you’ll find some rope ladders, swings and even a Wendy house!

J. M. Barrie’s Study

As the house transitions from the Darling home to Neverland, there is a slight transition through the New Library. Here, it isn’t difficult to imagine J. M. Barrie sitting at the desk, surrounded by books, dreaming of Neverland.

Don’t forget to spot the characters hanging on the Christmas tree! There are a few familiar faces in there!

Christmas at Castle Howard - Christmas in Neverland 3

Off to Neverland!

As you step back into the magic of Neverland, you are greeted by the shimmering mermaid lagoon. Watch closely because you might just spot a mermaid or two swimming across the floor thanks to some clever projections!

Christmas at Castle Howard - Christmas in Neverland 4

The next stop is the Music Room, which has been transformed into Captain Hook’s Cabin. The opulent room is dripping with gold, jewels, and pirate booty! It feels like Hook himself could saunter through the doors at any moment.

Christmas at Castle Howard - Christmas in Neverlnd 2

Once you reach the Crimson Dining Room, the Lost Boys are throwing a party – and a whole lot of food! Watch out when the food fight commences, there are eggs spattered around everywhere!

In the Turquoise Dining Room, you’ll shrink down to Tinkerbell’s size! See what life is like on a fairy scale while exploring her room decked for the festivities.

The Long Gallery

No story is complete without a heroic battle. As you step into The Long Gallery, you will find yourself treading the boards of Captain Hook’s pirate ship!

Large masts and ropes stick out from the floor, festooned with lights, and surrounded by the sounds of the sea. It is easy to become immersed in this space as you lose yourself in the excellent theme.

Brilliant projections create the impression you are looking out to sea from the ship. Then, the epic battle commences as Hook and Peter knock shelves and vases from the walls in a swordfight.

After the magical adventure, you are transported back through the window to the Darling’s living toom, ready to enjoy a family Christmas together. Plus, Peter and the Lost Boys are invited, they even have presents waiting for them under the tree!

Overall, it is a magnificent conclusion to this magical adventure. I didn’t want to leave The Long Gallery and Neverland behind!

Christmas at Castle Howard - Christmas in Neverland 7

The Chapel

Although not exclusively part of the Neverland story, you don’t want to miss a visit to the chapel before you exit. It is decorated with candles and a charming nativity scene.

As you leave the chapel, you can donate to the Chapel Charity Tree. Donations can be made in cash or by card to support Great Ormond Street Hospital.
