This free city-wide sculpture trail is inspired by the stone carvings of York Minster, with larger-than-life figures placed around the city centre through the summer. You can follow the trail at your own pace, spotting each sculpture as you wander between York’s landmarks, and it turns an ordinary stroll around the city into a proper adventure.
It works brilliantly as a free activity to weave into a wider day in York, whether you are visiting the Minster, browsing the Shambles, or stopping for coffee along the way. Pick up details from the Visit York Visitor Information Centre on Parliament Street to plan your route, and give yourself a couple of hours to take it all in without rushing.

Scarborough Art
Scarborough Art is a month-long celebration of creativity, featuring exhibitions, open studios, and workshops across the town. Over 70 artists will showcase work in painting, sculpture, photography, and printmaking, with many venues offering the chance to meet makers and purchase original pieces. From galleries to outdoor installations, the event invites you to explore both art and Scarborough’s diverse spaces.
Highlights include the Scarborough History at the Maritime Heritage Centre, the Time For Tea exhibition at Glass Box Gallery, and the Aesthetica Art Prize 20, which brings contemporary art to the coast. Interactive workshops, such as ‘Edible Art Gallery’, provide hands-on opportunities to engage with the creative process. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or a curious visitor, there’s something to discover.

Settle Flowerpot Festival
The Flowerpot Festival in Settle transforms the town into a colourful open-air gallery of quirky creations. You can explore at your own pace or follow one of three themed trails using a quiz leaflet to guide you. Each trail offers a unique route through the town’s streets, alleys, and hidden corners, making it a great way to see more of Settle.
Families can enjoy hands-on flowerpot workshops throughout August, which must be booked in advance. The festival was even featured on Channel 5’s Susan Calman’s Grand Day Out, highlighting its growing popularity. With a relaxed atmosphere and creative spirit, it’s a fun and free way to enjoy a summer day in the Yorkshire Dales.

Women at War – Summer Holidays
Eden Camp Modern History Museum near Malton dedicates its summer programme to the often-overlooked stories of women during the Second World War. You can follow trails, join workshops, watch living history performances, and take part in hands-on activities that bring these wartime experiences to life across the museum’s atmospheric huts.
The programme runs right through the summer holidays, which makes it an easy option for a family day out on a changeable August day, as much of the museum is under cover. Booking online saves on the gate price, and the site is large enough that older children and adults will find plenty to hold their interest alongside the younger ones.

Brick Explorers at RHS Harlow Carr
RHS Harlow Carr fills its gardens with a summer trail of brick-built wildlife sculptures, activity sheets, and hands-on building stations. Children can hunt for the creatures hidden among the borders and woodland, then sit down to build their own creations, which gives a garden visit real purpose beyond simply wandering.
Allow a couple of hours so you can enjoy the trail, the adventure playground, and the café too. Harlow Carr looks glorious in August with the herbaceous borders in full flow, and booking online keeps costs down. RHS members go free with up to two children, so it is a lovely regular outing through the holidays.

Race Across the World: The Experience York
Inspired by the BBC series, Race Across the World: The Experience York is a self-guided race through the city’s historic core. It sends teams of two to eight players from The Shambles to a finish at Coppergate. Along the way you solve clues and complete show-inspired challenges on foot. You set your own pace over roughly two to three hours.
It is an active, screen-light way to see the city. You will notice the snickelways and landmarks that most visitors walk straight past. It suits families with children old enough to enjoy a clue-solving walk. Groups of friends and couples looking for more than a standard stroll will enjoy it too.
The Shambles start places you among York’s independent shops and cafés, while the Coppergate finish sits beside the Jorvik quarter. That makes it easy to fold into a fuller day in the city. It is an outdoor activity, so dress for the weather and allow a couple of hours. Each team needs at least one adult aged 18 or over.

St Wilfrid’s Procession in Ripon
St Wilfrid’s Procession invites you to experience one of Yorkshire’s oldest traditions in the heart of Ripon. The event celebrates the region’s rich heritage, with colourful floats, lively music, and community groups parading through the city. You will spot the famous St Wilfrid’s horse leading the way, honouring the founder of Ripon Cathedral.
This event brings together families, visitors, and locals for a day of celebration and pride. The procession is a fantastic opportunity for you to explore Ripon’s history and enjoy a unique carnival atmosphere with plenty of sights and entertainment along the route.

Sounds of the Sixties
Live music brings York Castle Museum’s famous Sixties Street to life on selected Saturdays through August, with folk favourites and classic 1960s sounds echoing around the recreated shopfronts. It is a lovely way to add a bit of atmosphere to a museum visit, and the setting really makes the period come alive.
The music is included with general admission, so you get the full run of the museum’s galleries alongside it. It suits families and nostalgic grown-ups alike, and the Eye of York location is an easy walk from Clifford’s Tower and the city walls if you want to build a longer day out around it.

The Wizard Walk of York

Mary Queen of Scots Family Event
Bolton Castle brings one of its most famous chapters to life as costumed performers recreate Mary, Queen of Scots’ stay within its walls. The interactive family performances are pitched to draw children in, with plenty of storytelling and drama played out across the medieval rooms and grounds.
The setting does a lot of the work here, as Bolton Castle is beautifully preserved and sits in gorgeous Wensleydale countryside. A family ticket keeps a day out affordable, and under 4s go free. Combine it with a wander around the castle gardens and the surrounding Dales for a full day in the countryside.

York Georgian Festival
The York Georgian Festival returns with a lively programme that invites you to explore the city’s rich Georgian heritage. You can step inside historic venues such as Fairfax House and York Mansion House for unique behind-the-scenes tours, cookery demonstrations, and interactive workshops. There are chances for all ages to try Georgian dancing, sample ice cream made the old-fashioned way, and even experience the drama of a Georgian execution tour.
Over several days, you’ll find performances, talks, and immersive demonstrations throughout York, including rare theatrical shows and costumed promenades. Enjoy themed balls, hat exhibitions, and live music by candlelight. Whether you’re intrigued by Georgian fashion or want to learn about the women who shaped the era, there’s something for everyone. You can also enhance your visit with a stay at a Georgian townhouse hotel for an authentic experience.

Summer Garden Lates at Castle Howard
Summer Garden Lates invites you to enjoy Castle Howard’s gardens during a relaxed evening opening. Live music fills the Boar Garden, while pizza is served from the Fitzroy Café. A bar will also be available throughout the evening.
You can explore the Walled Garden and join a drawing workshop at the Temple of the Four Winds. The temple houses Es Devlin’s Library of the Four Winds, featuring a revolving sculpture created from hundreds of books. The evening runs until 8pm, with last entry to the grounds at 7pm.

Filey Food Festival
This free seaside food festival takes over the Evron Centre and Crescent Gardens in Filey, with more than 75 stalls piled high with local produce, street food, and artisan treats. It is a brilliant excuse to head to the coast, graze your way around the stalls, and soak up the friendly small-town atmosphere.
Entry is free, so you only pay for what you eat and drink, which makes it easy to bring the whole family. Filey’s wide sandy beach is just a short walk away, so you can pair your foodie afternoon with a paddle, an ice cream, and a stroll along the seafront to round off the day.

Whitby Regatta
Whitby Regatta is one of the coast’s great traditions, a long-running weekend of rowing races, yacht racing, free entertainment, and fireworks strung right across the harbour and town. The whole place buzzes with activity, and there is a real sense of community as crowds line the piers to watch the racing.
The free entertainment and firework displays make it a fantastic value day out, though parking fills quickly so arrive early or use the park and ride if it is running. Whitby is a wonderful base for the weekend, with the abbey, the harbour, and some of Yorkshire’s best fish and chips all within easy reach.
Hannah’s Highlight: Whitby is one of those places that stays with you, from the 199 steps up to the abbey to the salty air along the harbour. Time your visit around the regatta and you will see the town at its liveliest. Discover more free things to do in Whitby while you’re in town!

Kettlewell Scarecrow Festival
The Kettlewell Scarecrow Festival brings a burst of creativity to the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, with a fantastic trail of wacky and wonderful scarecrows to discover. This year, you can look forward to cakes, homemade soup, and community stalls, all set against stunning Dales scenery. Amanda Harper, presenter from Look North, will be judging the event, so there is extra excitement this year.
You are invited to enjoy a classic Yorkshire family day out, with great value and a relaxed atmosphere. All proceeds support local organisations, and contactless payments are available at stalls, though some cash is needed for car parking.

Ripley Show
Ripley Show offers a true celebration of Yorkshire’s rural traditions, featuring classes for livestock, baking, wine, handicrafts, and more. You can enjoy attractions such as a thrilling BMX display, fun dog show, terrier racing, vintage vehicles, and family activities throughout the day.
There are competitions for all ages, from fancy dress for children to new classes for rescue horses and Valais Blacknose Sheep. You will also find plenty of food, crafts, and trade stands, with free parking available for all visitors.

Blues Night with Callum Spencer & James Vezer
Elsworth at the Mill in Skipton pairs an evening of live blues from Callum Spencer and James Vezer with food from chef Bruce Elsworth. It is an intimate night out that brings together great music and great cooking under one roof in a characterful former corn mill.
This is one for couples or friends after a relaxed evening with a bit of soul to it. The setting inside High Corn Mill is atmospheric, and Skipton itself makes a lovely place to arrive early and explore first, with its castle, canal, and bustling high street all close by before you settle in for the night.

Candlelight: Vivaldi’s Four Seasons
The National Centre for Early Music in York hosts this candlelit classical concert, with Vivaldi’s Four Seasons performed by the flickering glow of hundreds of candles inside a historic converted church. The setting in St Margaret’s Church on Walmgate gives the whole evening a wonderfully intimate feel.
Candlelight concerts have a devoted following for good reason, and the acoustics of the medieval church suit the programme beautifully. It makes a memorable evening out in the city, and you can easily pair it with dinner beforehand in one of York’s many restaurants just a short walk away within the city walls.

NiddArt Trail
NiddArt Trail celebrates the artists, craftspeople and makers of Nidderdale through exhibitions at venues across the dale. You can discover paintings, prints, ceramics, textiles, jewellery and other locally made work. Many displays also offer opportunities to meet the people behind the pieces and buy original artwork.
The online trail launches first, making it easy to browse participating artists before planning your route. Live exhibitions then appear in studios, shops, galleries and community spaces throughout Nidderdale and the surrounding area. Opening dates vary between venues, so check the individual listings before setting out.

Harrogate Food & Drink Festival
Harrogate Food & Drink Festival at Ripley Castle offers you a weekend of culinary delights, live music, and family entertainment. Explore a vibrant selection of international street food and artisan markets, where you can taste gourmet treats and browse unique produce. There’s something for all tastes, from fine cheese to craft drinks, with a host of independent bars and a specialist lemonade stand.
You can enjoy live chef demos featuring some of Yorkshire’s top culinary talent, alongside music from award-winning performers. Children will love the magic shows, quizzes, and fairground attractions. The festival also supports Harrogate Mind, raising funds for mental health, and has a wellbeing area to explore.

Whitby Folk Week
Whitby Folk Week fills the seaside town with traditional music, song, dance and storytelling in the heart of Whitby. The programme features concerts, ceilidhs, talks and workshops for complete beginners through to experienced performers. Daily dance displays and two festival parades bring performances into Whitby’s streets.
You can hear artists including Jez Lowe, Phil Beer, Rosie Hood Band and Bob Fox with Stu Luckley. Family ceilidhs, children’s activities and youth workshops ensure younger visitors can join the celebrations. A week-long craft fair also offers instruments, handmade goods and festival merchandise.

Malham Show
Malham Show brings the best of Yorkshire’s rural traditions to the heart of the Dales. You can enjoy livestock displays, including Highland cattle, sheep, horses, and working dogs, along with live music and axemen demonstrations. The show also features family-friendly attractions such as children’s sports, a fun dog show, fancy dress, and a play area.

What’s on at Harewood this Summer
Harewood House near Leeds runs a full season of family-friendly events through the summer, from playground activities and exhibitions to gardens and grounds made for a proper day out. There is enough here to fill a whole day, with the grand house, the terrace, the bird garden, and the adventure playground all on site.
A family ticket keeps things affordable, and members go free with pre-booking. The estate is vast, so wear comfortable shoes and give yourselves time to explore the walled garden and lakeside walks. It is one of the most reliable summer days out in West Yorkshire, whatever the weather throws at you.

The Capybara Experience
Lotherton near Aberford offers this keeper-led animal encounter, where two guests get to meet and feed the resident capybaras. It is a lovely, hands-on experience for animal lovers, giving you time up close with these gentle, sociable creatures under the guidance of the keepers.
This makes a memorable gift or treat for a special occasion. Availability runs through August, but places are limited, so book ahead. Make a full day of it by exploring the rest of Lotherton’s estate, wildlife world, and gardens after your encounter.

Yorkshire Day at Bradford Industrial Museum
Bradford Industrial Museum marks Yorkshire Day with a free celebration of live music, Morris dancing, family activities, and a makers market. Set within the atmospheric former Moorside Mills, it is a warm-hearted community day out that leans right into Yorkshire pride.
Because it is free, it is an easy one to bring the whole family to, and the museum’s mills, machinery, and shire horses give you plenty to explore between the entertainment. It falls on the 1st of August, the traditional Yorkshire Day, so it is the perfect way to raise a flag to God’s Own Country.

Bradford Faith Trail
Bradford Faith Trail offers a unique opportunity to discover a little bit about Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and Christian (Roman Catholic and Church of England) faith buildings. About the faiths within them and how they link into Bradford’s local community culture and faith heritage.
You can visit as many places of worship as you like – each place of worship will be open for set times and you will be shown around by experienced guides who are there to answer your questions, and to make your visit more informative and enjoyable.
The Trail begins at St. Peter’s RC Church at the top of Leeds Road and works its way down Leeds Road, stopping at the Abu Bakar Masjid, the Shree Lakshmi Narayan Hindu Temple and the Guru Gobind Singh Ji Gurdwara, where everybody enjoys a langar (vegetarian lunch). It finishes with a tour of Bradford Cathedral and refreshments.

The Hepworth Wakefield Garden hosts this free summer pantry market, showcasing the best of Yorkshire produce, flowers, ceramics, and independent makers. It is a relaxed browse through beautifully made goods, set against the backdrop of the gallery’s riverside garden, and entry is completely free.
It makes an easy add-on to a visit to The Hepworth Wakefield itself, so you can wander the galleries, stock up on local treats, and enjoy the garden in one trip. The market runs across the summer, so there is no rush to catch a single date, and it is a lovely way to support Yorkshire makers.

Bradford African Festival of Arts
Bradford African Festival of Arts celebrates African culture, creativity and community through events across the city. The programme brings together visual art, film, fashion, theatre, music, comedy and traditional food. You can explore workshops, exhibitions and performances while discovering work from local and international artists.
Highlights include African cinema and fashion, beauty and pageantry at Darley Street Market. Live theatre and a Nollywood masterclass add further variety at Bradford Arts Centre. Centenary Square hosts an open-air market, food stalls and cultural storytelling. The festival closes with music, crafts and community celebrations across City Park and Centenary Square.

Halifax Show
Halifax Show brings a traditional agricultural celebration to Savile Park, just outside Halifax town centre. The programme combines livestock classes, arena entertainment, vintage vehicles and countryside traditions. You can see horses, sheep, goats, dog agility and a lively gundog scurry. Terrier racing and The Fire Band add even more action throughout the day.
Families can enjoy the carousel and kids’ zone between displays. The craft market offers another opportunity to browse while exploring the showground. You can also discover beekeeping, honey, horticulture, baking and handicraft classes. Smaller animal sections include cavies and mice, creating plenty of variety across the show.

VW Festival
The grounds of Harewood House host this large family-friendly Volkswagen festival, with classic and modern cars, live music, food, and camping options across the weekend. It is a proper celebration of all things VW, and the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, with plenty to see whether or not you are a petrolhead.

Leeds Festival

Official Yorkshire Day Celebrations in Goole

Carlton Towers’ Open House lets you explore this remarkable stately home through a relaxed, self-guided visit. Extreme Rockpool Safari at South Landing
Extreme Rockpool Safari explores Flamborough’s rocky shore during exceptionally low tides.
