Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Garden
Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Garden is a stunning World Heritage Site located near Ripon.
When you come across a site part owned by both English Heritage and National Trust, which is also considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’ve hit the perfect trifecta of national gems. And that’s exactly what Fountains Abbey is.
It was founded in 1132 by Benedictine monks who left their home at York to set up an independent monastery. The abbey grew and prospered over the next few centuries until it was dissolved during the Reformation of 1539.
Studley Royal Water Garden was developed in the 18th century by John Aislabie, an avid gardener, and former Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Marmion Tower
Marmion Tower is all that remains of the 15th-century gatehouse at Tanfield Castle. It is tucked away in the village of West Tanfield, just six miles north of Ripon.

Hackfall
Hackfall is a woodland Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
It was significantly landscaped during the 17th century and described as “one of the most beautiful woods in the country.”
For a period, it was left unattended and was a victim of vandalism until the Woodland Trust purchased it in 1989.
Since the purchase, Woodland Trust in partnership with Hackfall Trust and the Landmark Trust have been working hard to restore Hackfall to its former glory.
They have had help from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, who donated almost £1million for restoration work in 2007.

Druid’s Temple
The Druid’s Temple is a unique folly near Ripon. It consists of a series of stone formations and archways set in a circular layout.
Although The Druid’s Temple clearly takes inspiration from Druidism and other stone circles such as Stonehenge, it is unlikely it was built for any religious purposes.
Instead, it was built as a folly and a means of alleviating some of the local unemployment.
It is believed that William Danby commissioned The Druid’s Temple in the early 1800s. He was the owner of the Swinton Estate and Swinton Park at the time.
Although it wasn’t built for religious purposes, it was constructed during a time of significant interest in Druidism during the early Romantic period. It is even rumoured that Danby hired a hermit to live at the ruin for several years!

You mention the Marmion Tower and the Thornborough Henges BUT you haven’t mentioned another wonderful place right next to both – Nosterfield Local Nature Reserve. Created in 1996, and managed by the Lower Ure Conservation Trust, it has shown how a sympathetic restoration of an old sand and gravel quarry can deliver fantastic biodiversity. Recently Sir David Attenborough has told us that the UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world – Nosterfield has bucked that trend and has increased biodiversity locally! Come and see for yourself!
