Everything you need to know about Yorkshire Day

If you are wondering what Yorkshire Day is about, here’s an overview to bring you up to speed.

When is Yorkshire Day celebrated?

Yorkshire Day is celebrated on the 1st August each year.

How did Yorkshire Day start?

The first recognised Yorkshire Day celebration took place in 1975. It was celebrated by the Yorkshire Ridings Society in protest of the local government reorganisation of 1974.

The Yorkshire Ridings Society established Yorkshire Day in response to a change in local government administrative areas. Prior to the 1974 change, Yorkshire was made up of North Riding, West Riding, East Riding, with the City of York at the centre of the three Ridings.

The restructured administrative areas saw the addition of ‘South Yorkshire,’ which had previously been part of West Riding. Meanwhile, the changing Yorkshire boundaries meant that some people were ‘moved’ out of the county altogether.

The Yorkshire Ridings Society celebrates and promotes the original geographic and political definition of Yorkshire and the three Ridings prior to the 1974 restructuring. Yorkshire Day is an opportunity to celebrate Yorkshire identity and heritage based on the original definition of what it means to be from Yorkshire.

Why do we celebrate Yorkshire Day?

There are a few reasons why we celebrate Yorkshire Day. 1st August marks an important day in the Yorkshire calendar for a few reasons, which prompted this annual celebration.

These reasons include:

  • The Yorkshire Light Infantry have annually marked Minden Day on 1st August to commemorate the battle of Minden in 1759 when they picked white roses as tributes to their fallen comrades.
  • In 1834, the Slavery Abolition Act was passed in parliament. Hull MP William Wilberforce spearheaded the campaign.

Because of the role Yorkshire played in these significant historic events, 1st August was deemed the ideal date to celebrate the success and tenacity of those in God’s Own Country.

What happens on Yorkshire Day?

Each year on Yorkshire Day, members of the Yorkshire Ridings Society read a declaration of the integrity of Yorkshire.

The declaration states:

“I, (name), being a resident of the [West/North/East] Riding of Yorkshire [or City of York] declare:

That Yorkshire is three Ridings and the City of York, with these Boundaries of 1134 years standing;
That the address of all places in these Ridings is Yorkshire;

That all persons born therein or resident therein and loyal to the Ridings are Yorkshiremen and women;

That any person or corporate body which deliberately ignores or denies the aforementioned shall forfeit all claim to Yorkshire status.

These declarations made this Yorkshire Day [year]. God Save the King!”

    • Yorkshire Day is such a popular celebration locally. It is a shame it doesn’t fall on a weekend this year, as there were even more events happening last year! I love a delicious afternoon tea though and it is probably how I’ll be celebrating Yorkshire Day this year!
