What is Middleton Railway?
Middleton Railway is the world’s oldest continuously working railway. It was founded in 1758 to bring coal into the centre of Leeds. Since 1758, it has had trains running every single year. That is over 260 years of railway history!
Today, volunteers run this heritage railway to keep this important part of locomotive history alive for future generations. It is the ideal place to explore, to learn more about railway history, and discover local Leeds history for visitors of all ages.
Railway History in Leeds
Leeds once was a locomotive powerhouse.
Being honest, I was not aware of the railway history in Leeds before our visit!
The locomotive industry in Leeds began in 1812, and before long there were 9 major locomotive companies in Leeds, and a number of smaller firms.
The longest running organisation was Hunslet Engine Company who opened their doors in 1864 and were the last remaining locomotive firm in Leeds when they closed in 1995.
Leeds engines were sought after right across the world. And here’s a fun fact, the entire railway system for the Kingdom of Nepal was built and supplied by a Leeds company!
When you first enter Middleton Railway, just beyond the ticket booth you will find a fascinating display dedicated to the railway history of Leeds. Make sure you don’t miss it!
Visiting Middleton Railway
Middleton Railway is a fun trip out for visitors of all ages. And you’ll find a surprising number of things to see and do on your visit! Here is your guide to visiting Middleton Railway.
Middleton Railway Museum
Middleton Railway has a free-to-enter museum, which is just beyond the ticket booth and cafe. Inside the Engine House, you’ll instantly stand in awe of how many grand engines line the room.
The impressive collection of engines features many that were made in the Leeds area. Some of them were built in the 1890s!
The museum is a great place to learn more about the history of the engines and the railway history of Leeds. You can also get hands on and climb aboard some of the engines to learn more about how to drive a steam train.
Steam Train Rides
The highlight of any trip to Middleton Railway is taking a ride on one of their steam trains. The exit at the far end of the Engine House will bring you out onto the platform. Here, you can board the carriages lead by one of their three engines and enjoy a short ride to Middleton Park.
The journey is a gentle ride along the almost one mile stretch of track. The train moves along at a leisurely pace, and you will arrive at Park Halt in just over five minutes.
And although the journey is short, the fun doesn’t stop there. You can choose to remain on the train and return to the Engine House if you wish. Alternatively, you can disembark and explore Middleton Park, then catch a later train for your return journey.
Middleton Park
Middleton Park is a hidden gem in its own right! This 630-acre park is packed with walking trails and ancient woodland. It is the ideal place to hop off the train and explore!
Strolling through this peaceful site, you would never know you were just four miles from Leeds city centre. Stretch your legs on a woodland walk or kids can play in the playground before jumping back on a later train to make your return journey.
Events at Middleton Railway
Middleton Railway host several events and special services throughout the year. Here is a selection of some of their most popular reoccurring and previous events to give you a flavour of what is in store. You will find the most up to date event information here.
Santa Specials
During December, a very special visitor joins the team of Middleton Railway volunteers. Throughout weekends in December and a few days before Christmas you can hop aboard the Santa Special train. Along the route, children up to 12 years old will be gifted a present from Santa Claus himself!

Mince Pie Specials
Blow away the cobwebs of Christmas with a New Year’s ride on the steam train. Enjoy a gentle ride on the train with the option to hop off at Middleton Park for a refreshing New Year’s walk.

Walks in the Woods
In previous years, Middleton Railway have teamed up with Friends of Middleton Park to run this special event. Hop aboard a train then be met by your guide at Park Halt for a picturesque, guided woodland walk through bluebells of Middleton Park before your return journey.
Volunteering at Middleton Railway
If you have passion for preserving the history of the railway and are keen to learn new skills, why not join the team of Middleton Railway volunteers?
The railway relies completely on volunteers to run the museum and train services. Everyone from the shop staff to the drivers are giving up a bit of their time to keep Middelton Railway alive for more visitors to enjoy.
You don’t need special skills or experience to volunteer. You can dedicate a little of your time to supporting a specific project, or you can commit to working through the ranks as you receive on-the-job training to build your way up to an engineer or driver.

What to Know Before You Go
Before you set off for Middleton Railway, here’s all the information to know before you visit.
Where is Middleton Railway?
Middleton Railway is located in Middleton, just 4 miles south of Leeds city centre. You can find it by navigating to LS10 2JQ.
The railway is easiest accessed by car. If you travel to Leeds via train, you can take a short taxi ride to Middleton Railway.
There are a number of local bus services from Leeds including 117, 203, 118S, 200, 202, 118 or 201 which you can take to Burton Road, Beeston Hill, but it is then roughly a ten-minute walk to the railway.
Facilities at Middleton Railway
Middleton Railway has all the facilities you will need for your trip.
Car Park: there is a visitor car park which is free to use. Simply navigate to LS10 2JQ and keep an eye out for the large red sign.
Cafe: there is a lovely cafe onsite selling hot and cold drinks, snacks and more to keep you sustained for the duration of your visit.
Shop: there is a small gift shop selling railway books and train-themed toys for children. They make great souvenirs or gifts!
Toilets: there are toilets onsite which are in the entry foyer before the ticket counter.
How much does it cost to visit Middleton Railway?
A visit to Middleton Railway is an affordable day out. Entry to the museum in the Engine House is free, so you just need to pay your train fare to ride the steam train.
Adult tickets (15 years+) are £9 for a return ticket to the park and back, and £4.50 for a single one-way ticket.
Children (5-15 years) can travel for £4 return or £2 single. Children under 5 years travel for free.
A family ticket for 2 adults and up to 3 children is available for £22. And there are reductions available for concessions on certain services.
Tickets can be purchased on arrival at Middleton Railway. For the most up to date ticket prices and information, check the website before you visit.
Fares may differ for special events, and these may need to be booked in advance. Check the website for specific event details.
Opening Times
Middleton Railway are open and running train services on weekends including Bank Holiday Mondays. They’re also open on Wednesdays during school holidays between March and October.
Their regular services do not run in November as they prepare for the Santa Special services. Dates and times may differ for special events.
On days when the services are running, the site opens at 10am with the first train departing at 10.30. The final train returns from the park at 3:45pm with the site closing at 4:30pm.

How Long Will I Spend at Middleton Railway?
Don’t be deceived, you’ll spend longer at Middleton Railway than you think!
We anticipated spending a few hours at the railway, but our outing turned into a full day trip!
You can adapt the length of your stay to fit the time you have available. If you simply want to take a ride on the steam train and explore the museum, an hour or two would be sufficient. But you can really make a day of it by hopping off at Middleton Park and spending a few hours walking and exploring!
Accessibility at Middleton Railway
Middleton Railway have several accessibility features so that everyone can thoroughly enjoy their visit.
These include but are not limited to:
- Disabled parking spaces
- Ramp access to the ticket booth in the Engine House
- Open doors for easy access
- Level access and lift access throughout the museum
- Accessible toilets
- Ramp access to the platform and passenger carriages
- Dogs including assistance dogs are permitted
- Free travel for registered carers (conditions apply)
- Trained staff to inform passengers

I didn’t either! I feel so ashamed that I didn’t know about the railway history! At one time, places all over the world wanted to own trains from Leeds! Middleton Railway is a wonderful dedication to the history and a great way to keep it alive for future generations. I think the ticket prices are a real bargain for a ride on the train. A ride on the steam train is so much fun! It isn’t very noisy actually! The carriages are enclosed so it isn’t very loud when you are inside.
