Filming Locations In Yorkshire

Yorkshire’s countryside is sprawling and mostly untouched. So it is easy to see why it is a popular choice when seeking out the perfect destination to shoot a film or TV scene. Check out these 30 destinations used as filming locations in Yorkshire.

How many of them have you seen on the screen?

Movie Filming Locations In Yorkshire

From big blockbusters to cult classics, Yorkshire has played host to a surprising number of iconic movie scenes over the years. Have you visited any of these familiar movie filming locations in Yorkshire?

Malham Cove – Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (2010)

Possibly one of the most recognizable landscapes in Yorkshire is the limestone pavement that sits atop Malham Cove. This rugged, otherworldly terrain has a certain magical appeal. This might just be what drew some rather famous wizards to this site for the seventh installment of the Harry Potter film series.

In part one of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, Harry and Hermione can be seen camping on the limestone pavement. Other scenes from the movie also filmed in the area include locations such as Malham Tarn and Gordale Scar.

Goathland Station – Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone (2001)

The Deathly Hallows wasn’t Harry Potter’s first visit to Yorkshire mind you. Right at the start of the series, one of the most iconic scenes is filmed in the county. Goathland Station transformed into the bustling Hogsmeade Station. You can spot this filming location as the students depart from Hogwarts at the end of Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone.

If you want to experience a slice of the action, you can hop on one of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway’s steam trains. It’s a leisurely way to enjoy a scenic ride through the North Yorkshire countryside. Unfortunately, they cannot guarantee Hogwarts as the final destination! But you can easily imagine yourself aboard the Hogwarts Express!

Halton Gill – The Woman In Black (2012)

It wasn’t long after Harry Potter ended that Daniel Radcliffe found himself back in Yorkshire. This time, in the role of lawyer Arthur Kipps in The Woman In Black. Kipps is sent to the desolate Eel Marsh House to collect papers of the deceased Alice Drablow. But in this supernatural horror film, his stay takes on a dark turn.

And speaking of his stay, the fictional town of Crythin Gifford where Kipps finds accommodation is filmed in the sleepy hamlet of Halton Gill. Just a few miles north of Malham, this remote hamlet sits at the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. Thanks to its remote location and hardy appearance, it is easy to see why it was chosen as the setting for this haunted community.

Gordale Scar – The Dark Crystal (1982)

Jim Henson and Frank Oz’s 1982 puppet-animated movie The Dark Crystal is known for its ground-breaking animatronics. The movie paved the way for a second collaboration between the pair in 1986 with the movie Labyrinth, starring David Bowie. The Dark Crystal tells the story of Jen, a Gelfling, who is on a quest to restore balance to the world of Thra and overthrow the Skeksis by restoring the broken crystal.

In the movie, the entrance to the Valley of the Mystics is filmed at Gordale Scar waterfall in Malham. It is only on screen for a few seconds, but it is a poignant moment. As Jen sets out on his quest he can be seen pausing at the top of the waterfall.

Keighley and Worth Valley Railway – The Railway Children (1970)

Many children grew up watching the 1970 family film The Railway Children. It is still considered the best adaptation of E. Nesbit’s novel. It tells the story of three children who relocate to Yorkshire with their mother after their father is arrested on suspicion of being a spy.

And it is only fitting that a Yorkshire destination was chosen when it came to shooting the movie. If you’ve seen the film, you’ll likely recognize Oakworth railway station, which forms part of the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway.

Buttershaw – Rita, Sue And Bob Too (1987)

Cult classic RitaSue and Bob Too is a 1987 British dark comedy film, set in Bradford. It is about two teenage schoolgirls who have a fling with a married man. The movie is filmed in and around Bradford. But the city has changed considerably over the last 3 decades, and many of the original filming locations have been demolished.

Rita and Sue’s houses were filmed on location on the Boulevard estate in Buttershaw and have since been demolished. However, Bob’s house at 5 Bramham Drive, Baildon still exists and was even available on the market a few years ago. Other locations that can still be seen are 493 Leeds Rd, Bradford (Luna Radio Kars) and the Brontë Parsonage Museum, and Main Street in Haworth.

Leeds – The Damned United (2009)

The Damned United is a 2009 sports film adapted from David Peace’s bestselling 2006 novel The Damned Utd. It is a largely fictional book based on Peace’s interpretation of Brian Clough’s short-lived role as football manager of Leeds United in 1974.

The crew was granted the use of Elland Road Stadium for the film. The South West corner is used in the training ground sequences, as it still boasts the original 1970s entrance. Other Leeds spots that made it into the film include Headingley Stadium, the former site of Cookridge Hospital, and a linen hire company in Armley.

Harewood House & Wentworth Woodhouse – Downton Abbey: The Movie (2019)

In 2019 the TV phenomenon Downton Abbey made its debut on the big screen. Despite the fact the popular period drama is set in Yorkshire, none of the TV episodes are filmed here. But this was rectified with the filming of Downton Abbey: The Movie.

A selection of Yorkshire locations are used for the filming of the movie. But most notably, Harewood House in Leeds and Wentworth Woodhouse in Rotherham are both used for glamorous interior settings. The two buildings are paired because Harewood House has a gallery, rather than a ballroom, so Wentworth Woodhouse was scouted to fill the gap.

And it certainly left an impression. Mark Ellis, Downton Abbey location manager said, “I’ve never seen a ballroom like that in any home I’ve visited.”

Elland Road & Odsal Stadium – The King’s Speech (2010)

The King’s Speech tells the story of the man who became King George VI. After his brother abdicates, George reluctantly assumes the throne. He is plagued by a dreaded stammer and considered unfit to be king. So he engages the help of an unorthodox speech therapist named Lionel Logue.

The opening scene, set at the closing ceremony of the 1925 British Empire Exhibition at Wembley Stadium, is filmed in Yorkshire. More specifically, at Elland Road, home of Leeds United, and Odsal Stadium, home of Bradford RLFC. Elland Road is used for the speech elements of George stammering his way through his first public address, and Odsal Stadium was selected because of its resemblance to Wembley Stadium in 1925.

North York Moors – Testament Of Youth (2014)

Testament of Youth is a 2014 British drama film based on the First World War memoir of Vera Brittain. The film stars Alicia Vikander as Vera, a young woman who abandoned her studies at Oxford, to become a war nurse.

The railway station scenes, the train interiors, and the scene in the railway cafe are shot at Keighley railway station. The landscape shots of period trains are filmed at the heritage track of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Ravenscar and Robin Hood’s Bay in the North York Moors are used for the coastal shots. And the hospital corridor scenes are filmed in Sheffield Town Hall.

Skipton – Dark River (2017)

The 2017 movie Dark River stars Ruth Wilson, Mark Stanley, and Sean Bean. It tells the story of a woman who returns to the home she fled 15 years earlier in order to claim the tenancy of her father’s farm. And who then becomes involved in a dispute with her brother.

The movie was originally intended as a direct adaptation of Rose Tremain’s novel Trespass, which is set in Southern France. However, director Clio Barnard was encouraged to make the story her own and she changed the setting to Yorkshire instead.

The primary filming locations in Yorkshire were Skipton and Malham. Many critics have commented on how pivotal the setting is to the plot. To the point that the Yorkshire landscape almost becomes a character in its own right.

Flamborough Head – Dad’s Army (2016)

The east coast of Yorkshire comprises of a striking coastline. So it’s no surprise that Yorkshire caught the eye of location scouts. Particularly when they were looking for the perfect setting for the fictional Walmington-on-Sea in the 2016 revival of war comedy Dad’s Army.

Much of the filming took place along the East Yorkshire coastline including Flamborough Head, North Landing, and Bridlington. The East Riding Theatre in Beverley is used for the Church Hall, Parade room, and Captain Mainwaring’s office. Sections of the film are also captured in Leeds and Pickering.

Castle Howard – Brideshead Revisited (1981 & 2008)

Many locations would be honored to be chosen as a filming location, particularly for a title as iconic as Evelyn Waugh’s novel. So we can only guess how ecstatic the team at Castle Howard was when they were chosen to represent the Marchmain’s family home not once, but twice! Today, the estate is still synonymous with Brideshead Revisited.

In 1981, Granada selected the location to film the Brideshead Revisited series, with a cast including Jeremy Irons, Anthony Andrews, Diana Quick, Laurence Olivier, Claire Bloom, and John Gielgud. When the role was reprised in 2008 for a Miramax production, actors Ben Whishaw, Matthew Goode, Hayley Atwell, Michael Gambon, and Emma Thompson paid the impressive palace a visit. You can get a behind the scenes peek of the filming process here.

Fountains Abbey, Allerton Castle & Duncombe Park – The Secret Garden (1993 & 2020)

Allerton Castle is used for exterior shots of Misselthwaite Manor in the 1993 movie The Secret Garden based on the novel by Frances Hodgeson Burnett. It is paired with Fountains Abbey to create the Misselthwaite Manor exterior. While a small gated doorway just opposite became the hidden entrance into the garden.

The more recent 2020 version of the movie chose Duncombe Park as the exterior for Misselthwaite Manor instead. However, Fountains Abby did make an appearance in this movie too. This time, the ancient abbey ruins have been turned into a sunken temple, complete with vine-covered walls.

Haworth – To Walk Invisible: The Brontë Sisters (2016)

It is only fitting that a movie about three of England’s most famous authors is filmed in their home village in Yorkshire. To Walk Invisible sees Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë battle to overcome obstacles and publish their now world-famous novels. With their father half-blind and their brother declining, this film tells of how these three talented sisters turned their writing into a career against all odds.

The movie is filmed in the Brontë sisters’ home village of Haworth. The Brontë legacy makes this a popular tourist site today. But other than the swell of the tourist population, very little else about Haworth has changed since the sisters lived there. If they were to take a stroll through the village today, the sisters would certainly recognize Haworth as their home!

Kettlewell – Calendar Girls (2003)

Calendar Girls is based on a true story of a group of middle-aged Yorkshire women. In April 1999, they produced a nude calendar to raise money for Leukaemia Research after the death of their husbands.

But whereas the actual Calendar Girls were members of the Rylstone Women’s Institute, much of the film was shot in and around the village of Kettlewell in North Yorkshire. Kettlewell is located some ten miles away from Rylstone, but it stood in for the fictional village of Knapely.

You can still visit many of the locations used in the movie today. It is even possible to take a tour of the sites, from those who experienced the filming first-hand!

Filming Locations In Yorkshire - Kettlewell

Sheffield – The Full Monty (1997)

Calendar Girls wasn’t the first film centered around nudity to be filmed in Yorkshire. The 1997 comedy The Full Monty was set and filmed in Sheffield. It tells the story of six unemployed men, who decide to form a male striptease act in order to gather enough money to improve their lives.

The film was shot entirely on location in and around Sheffield in April 1996. With the exception of a couple of locations in Shirebrook, Derbyshire. The opening sequence of the Sheffield promotion film from 1972 is taken from City on the Move. This was a film commissioned by Peter Wigley, Sheffield’s first-ever publicity officer, to convince people that Sheffield was a center for tourism and commerce.

Barnsley – Kes (1969)

In 1969, Ken Loach made British film history with his classic tale of a boy and his kestrel.  Kes follows Billy Casper, a boy who lives a tough life in the Yorkshire mining town of Barnsley. Failing at school, he finds an escape from his day-to-day life in the form of a small kestrel.

It’s set in the industrial north of England, in the days when the area was still a thriving mining community. Real South Yorkshire filming locations are used around the villages of Hoyland and Tankersley, and in Barnsley itself.

TV Filming Locations In Yorkshire

But movies aren’t the only way to see Yorkshire from the comfort of your home. The county has made plenty of appearances on the small screen too. Here are some of the top TV filming locations in Yorkshire.

Oakwell Hall – Wuthering Heights (2009)

We’ve all heard of Emily Brontë’s timeless novel Wuthering Heights. It tells the story of foundling Heathcliff, who is raised by the wealthy Earnshaws in Yorkshire. But in later life launches a vendetta against the family. So it’s only fitting that Wuthering Heights is depicted by a building with a Brontë connection.

Oakwell Hall was visited by Charlotte Brontë and immortalized in literature as “Fieldhead” in her novel Shirley. This TV series tells a more modern love story however, as Tom Hardy (Heathcliff) married his Wuthering Heights co-star Charlotte Riley (Cathy) after they first met when working on the production. If you want to see why people fall in love with and at Oakwell, you can visit the hall and country park.

Throughout Yokshire – The ABC Murders (2019)

The 2019 adaptation of Agatha Christie’s The ABC Murders starring John Malkovich as Detective Hercule Poirot is essentially a highlight reel of the top filming locations in Yorkshire. Almost the whole film is made up of scenes shot in Yorkshire. With some surprising and creative transformations of the original buildings!

Just some of the locations used include Bradford City Hall, which took on the role of Scotland Yard. And an underpass at Keighley Station which was incredibly transformed into Kings Cross. Establishing shots of Andover are captured in UNESCO World Heritage Site, Saltaire. Plus, Grosmont on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway played the role of Andover Station.

Ripon Spa Baths was transformed into Bexhill Station, while Newby Hall was cast in the role of Carmichael Clarke’s residence at Churston. Other filming locations include Pickering Station, City Varieties in Leeds, Embsay Station, The Queens Hotel and Quebecs Hotel, both in Leeds. St John’s Square in Wakefield, Little Germany in Bradford, and finally, Leeds Town Hall as the courts of law.

How’s that for filming locations in Yorkshire?!

York – Jonathan Strange And Mr Norrell (2015)

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is a historical fantasy TV series adapted by Peter Harness from Susanna Clarke’s best-selling 2004 novel. It was nominated for four BAFTA awards and recognized by the British Film Institute as one of the top ten most important television programmes of 2015.

It is set in England during the Napoleonic Wars at the beginning of the 19th century. The series presents an alternative history where magic is widely acknowledged but rarely practiced.

The crew spent four months filming in Yorkshire at locations throughout the county. The series is primarily filmed in York, including St Williams College, Lady Peckett’s Yard, College Street, The Shambles, York Minster, and Newbrough Priory.

Duncombe Park – Victoria (2016 – )

There is a reason Yorkshire attracts so many royal period dramas. Duncombe Park doubles as the exterior of Buckingham Palace in the TV drama which tells the story of Queen Victoria’s ascent to the throne and subsequent reign. A glimpse of Duncombe Park shows why it could easily be mistaken for the royal palace.

Victoria also makes use of the dynamic-duo Harewood House and Wentworth Woodhouse once again for their regal interiors. Other grand houses such as Newby Hall, Brodsworth Hall, Castle Howard, and Carlton Towers also feature in the series. As well as city locations in Bradford, Hull and York, and coastal scenes at Flamborough and Whitby. Beverley Minster is also featured as Westminster Abbey.

Shibden Hall – Gentleman Jack (2019 – )

In 2019 Suranne Jones teamed up with script-writer Sally Wainwright to tell the story of Anne Lister, dubbed ‘the first modern lesbian.’ And no-one could have anticipated the explosion of interest in ‘shabby little Shibden’ as it is referred to in episode 1.

Shibden Hall was the obvious filming location for the popular series. It was both the place where Anne lived, and it was where her hidden diaries were found. They were discovered behind a panel in the wall when the hall passed into the ownership of Halifax Corporation in 1933. Since the BBC series first aired, the Shibden Hall museum has become a popular attraction for fans to visit.

Harewood Estate – Emmerdale (1972 – )

When Emmerdale first aired on screens back in 1972, it was filmed in the village of Arncliffe in North Yorkshire. In 1975, the fictional village moved to West Yorkshire in order to cut production costs. Here, it is filmed in another real-life village, Esholt in Shipley.

The exterior scenes of the soap were filmed at Esholt for 22 years. But by 1998 local residents had grown tired of the production crew’s presence and the tourists the soap was attracting.

ITV then set up a replica of Esholt on the Harewood Estate on the outskirts of Leeds instead. Fans can enjoy The Emmerdale Studio Experience, a guided walking tour of the purpose-built Emmerdale set. Although these are temporarily cancelled due to coronavirus.

Dalton Mills – Gunpowder (2017)

In 2017 the BBC produced Gunpowder, the dramatization of the Gunpowder Plot against King James, starring Kit Harrington. But to recreate 17th-century London including the Houses of Parliament, they turned to Yorkshire. Most specifically, Dalton Mills, a former Victorian textile factory in Keighley, Yorkshire.

Other locations throughout Yorkshire appear in the series including National Trust’s East Riddlesden Hall in Bradford and Fountains Abbey in Ripon. We also see snapshots of Oakwell Hall in Birstall, Ripley Castle in Harrogate, and Kirkstall Abbey in Leeds. As well as Bolton Abbey Estate, Lendal Bridge in York City Centre and the famous Ilkley Moor in Bradford.  Beverley Minster in East Yorkshire was chosen as the filming location of the Palace of Westminster.

Goathland – Heartbeat (1992 – 2010)

The quaint village of Goathland in the North York Moors National Park is famously known as Aidensfield, the fictional village of the ITV police drama Heartbeat. The show went on to film 372 episodes after it first aired in 1992. Before PC Nick Rowan and the gang hung up the truncheon in 2010.

Goathland is a bracing moorland village situated on the eastern edge of the North York Moors National Park. It can be found close to Whitby, York, and the Yorkshire Coast. And yes, it is the same Goathland whose station doubles as Hogsmede! It’s a much-loved Yorkshire filming location.

Holmfirth – Last Of The Summer Wine (1973 – 2010)

After an impressive 37 year run and shown in over 25 countries around the world, Last of the Summer Wine finally came to an end in 2010. The programme is known as the first comedy series to do away with the live studio audience. Instead, all filming was moved to Holmfirth. The episodes were filmed and then shown to preview audiences, whose laughter was recorded and added to the soundtrack of the episode.

Holmfirth is still incredibly proud of the Last of the Summer Wine legacy. If you want to experience the area first hand, you can download a tour map from the local council website. It specifically celebrates this iconic Yorkshire filming location.

Wakefield – A Touch Of Frost (1992 – 2010)

The gritty TV crime drama A Touch Of Frost ran for almost two decades between 1992 to 2010. Although it is set in the fictional South Midlands town of Denton, much of the filming took place in West Yorkshire.

The programme was produced by the ITV studio in Leeds, and most of the outdoor locations were shot in West Yorkshire. Several scenes are filmed in and around the city of Wakefield and neighboring towns of Pontefract and Castleford.

Filming Locations In Yorkshire - Wakefield

Calder Valley – Happy Valley (2014 – )

The BAFTA award-winning crime drama Happy Valley is written by Sally Wainwright and stars Sarah Lancashire. The series follows the personal and professional life of Police Sergeant Catherine Cawood, a no-nonsense police sergeant who heads up a team of officers in a rural Yorkshire valley. The third series is in production as of Autumn 2020.

The series is not only set in but also filmed at locations throughout the Calder Valley. The most popular and reoccurring locations in the series include Todmorden, Luddenden, Mytholmroyd, Bradford, Keighley, Sowerby Bridge, Hebden Bridge, and Heptonstall.

Leeds – Peaky Blinders (2013 – )

Despite being set in Birmingham in 1919, the majority of the popular TV series is actually filmed in Liverpool. However, a handful of Yorkshire destinations do make an appearance in the series, including several in the city of Leeds.

Leeds City Varieties and Leeds Town Hall have both played host to the cast during the series, as well as the neighbouring Bradford City Hall. Plus some popular reoccurring filming locations in Yorkshire such as Saltaire and the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway.

There was definitely a lot of CGI used but it is an incredible feat nonetheless! It amazes me how they can visualize these locations as something else and shoot them in a way that you’d never know the difference! I think the Harry Potter legacy will hang around Yorkshire for a long time!
