Why do you celebrate Burns Night?

Traditionally, Burns Night is celebrated annually in Scotland. The celebrations usually take place on or around 25th January.

The event commemorates the life of poet Robert Burns, who was born on 25th January 1759. Burns made a significant contribution to Scottish culture, which is why the day is marked annually. His best-known work is the song that we all hear as the clock strikes midnight to mark the new year, Auld Lang Syne.

What happens at Burns Night?

Like all great celebrations, this highlight of any Burns Night celebration is food. Burns Night is an opportunity to indulge in traditional Scottish dishes. The main delight is the haggis, which is piped in, then someone reads Burns’ Address to a Haggis as the haggis is cut. The haggis is then toasted with whisky before the guests tucked in.

Although the celebration has evolved over the years, most modern Burns Night celebrations are lively evenings of Scottish food, bagpipers, whisky, and dancing!

I have to admit, I don’t think I have ever been to an actual burns night like this! We’ve always just celebrated at home (or at Scottish friend’s homes.)

Slightly off topic, but have you ever had vegetarian haggis? M&S used to do a really fabulous one. It goes so well with neeps and tatties.

I haven’t tried vegetarian haggis but now I want to! The regular kind if haggis doesn’t really appeal to me but I don’t want to miss out on the celebration – maybe a vegetarian one is the answer! I might try and locate one! Thanks for the tip!
