Who was Vincent Van Gogh?

Before delving into the experience, it is worth establishing who Van Gogh was, and why we are seeing a sudden revived interest in his work.

Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter. He lived between 1853 and 1890, when he took his own life at just 37 years old.

During his short lifetime, Van Gogh produced an impressive 2,100 paintings, however, he only successfully sold one. Some of his most famous works include Sunflowers and The Starry Night.

Sadly, one of the other popular, well-known facts about Van Gogh was his attempt to sever his left ear, believed to be due to his poor mental health at the time.

Although Van Gogh’s work did gain popularity after his death, this new wave of interest in his work has exploded thanks to a furry of immersive digital exhibitions.

Why the work of Vincent Van Gogh?

Much of the boom in interest is attributed to a scene in the Netflix series Emily in Paris in which Emily is immersed in Starry Night. However, the fact that Van Gogh’s work falls within the public domain makes him an appealing artist to use for these experiences thanks to minimal licence fees.

Whether it is was a brief cameo on TV or the lucrative licencing arrangement, Van Gogh The Immersive Experience has itched a scratch we didn’t know existed – the demand for a new way to experience art.

Either way, the vibrant colours, broad brush strokes and instantly recognisable style of Van Gogh’s work makes it perfectly suited to this kind of immersive experience.

What is Van Gogh The Immersive Experience?

Van Gogh The Immersive Experience is a 360-degree immersive visual and audio experience. It transforms the room into a dynamic and engaging art exhibition unlike any other you have seen before.

Accompanied by an atmospheric soundtrack and spoken quotes from Van Gogh himself, the immersive experience brings the artist’s works to life through animation. You will be surrounded by the art and become a part of the masterpiece as it is projected around and onto you.

The Van Gogh Immersive Experience is available at York St. Mary’s. The church can be found in York city centre on Castlegate (YO1 9RN).

How long does the Immersive Van Gogh experience take?

The projection display lasts for approximately 45 minutes. However, it is played on a continuous loop so you can stay longer if you wish.

If you want to take part in the other activities available such as the colouring and virtual reality, allocate around 90 minutes for your full experience.

How was Van Gogh immersive created?

The Van Gogh immersive experience uses innovative technology to bring you this unique art exhibition.

Van Gogh’s paintings were scanned in high resolution. Sections were then animated to create the dynamic nature of the exhibition. Finally, projection mapping is used to intelligently project the performance onto the space being used.

Each adaptation of the immersive experience is unique to the building in which it is being projected. When you visit, you will notice that the pillars of St Mary’s are used as the base for projected pillars, and ledges are transformed into balconies.

The paintings aren’t merely projected onto the walls of the building, instead, the building itself becomes an extension of the artwork. It is this attention to detail and clever thinking that makes the exhibition one of a kind.

Van Gogh The Immersive Experience Review

Here are my thoughts of my visit to Van Gogh The Immersive Experience.

Arriving at the Experience

When we initially arrive at St Mary’s we had to loop around the church to find the entrance. If you approach the building from Coppergate, the entrance is easy to spot.

However, if you arrive from Coppergate Walk (near Jorvik Viking Centre) you will need to follow the path round the building to the entrance which is pictured below.

Entering the Experience

When you book tickets to the experience, you will receive a timed entry slot. We were unsure whether this was a live start time, so arrived around ten minutes early in case.

The show is displayed on a continuous loop, so the timed entry is simply designed to manage the number of visitors at any one time.

We were permitted to enter on arrival even though we were a little early. Most people will stay through one showing of the performance (around 45 minutes) however, this isn’t monitored so you could stay longer and watch the show multiple times if you wish.

When watching the performance, you can pick which Van Gogh printed deck chair you want to sit it. Each seat has an incredible view. But you may wish to switch seats throughout the performance if capacity allows. This gives you the chance to see the show from all angles.

Enjoying the Main Show

Depending on the timing of your entry slot, you might arrive to the show mid-way through the performance. This doesn’t directly impact your viewing experience.

Even though it is clear when the projection is intended to begin, simply take note of the point you enter, and continue watching until you return to that point.

The performance is led by themes and concepts within Van Gogh’s works, as opposed to a chronological timeline, so you don’t need to worry about watching from the start.

The projections really do live up to the immersive name. It is impressive the way the show makes use of the architecture of the church as part of the performance. The arches, ledges and recesses become an extension of the art, as opposed to simply projecting the images onto the walls.

There’s some clever stuff going on behind the scenes to get the projections so accurate!

A Moving Performance

What I also loved about the performance was the use of Van Gogh quotes throughout. This distinctive touch gives a snapshot into the mind of the troubled artist as you join him on the highs and lows of his career.

This intimate insight into Van Gogh’s mind makes the performance really moving. There is a bittersweet feeling when you see the immense success of the artwork today. Particularly in these immersive experiences where visitors of all ages are enjoying them.

This contrasts with some of the deeply troubling and depressing thoughts Van Gogh struggled with. There is a slight tinge of sadness that he never lived to see the enormous success of his work.

It would be remiss not to also mention the impressive soundtrack that accompanies the performance. The music is cleverly composed to take you on the emotional rollercoaster experienced by Van Gogh, and it perfectly complements the projections.

Other activities at Van Gogh The Immersive Experience

As well as the projection show, there are a few other activities that make up Van Gogh The Immersive Experience. Here are the other activities you can experience on your visit.

Create Your Own Art

Once you have exited the projection show, you will encounter a bench with space for drawing and colouring. You will also find a selection of Van Gogh colouring sheets, or some blank ones to design your own.

Although not an avid artist, I thoroughly enjoyed sitting here and colouring in one of the designs. It is possible to still hear the audio from the projection while you colour to inspire you. The whole experience was very relaxing.

After around 20 minutes we had completed and signed our masterpieces.

Then you can place your picture on a scanner and with the click of a button, your artwork will appear in the digital gallery on the wall. It is very satisfying to see your hard work displayed up there!

Virtual Reality Experience

Another optional stop before you exit is the virtual reality experience. This is not included in your ticket price, but only costs £3 per person, so is well worth trying while you are there.

The VR experience physically puts you in Van Gogh’s shoes. You will spend a day strolling through the towns and countryside that inspired him, so you can experience them first-hand. At various points on the tour, you will pause and see Van Gogh’s painting come to life in the environment in which he painted them.

Although short, the VR experience is a lovely addition to Van Gogh The Immersive Experience. It is another fantastic way to immerse yourself into Van Gogh’s mind. And is another example of how modern technology can breathe new life into iconic art.

Display Boards

Towards the end of the exhibition, you will see some display boards. These boards highlight the global success of Van Gogh following his death. Seeing the millions his original pieces have sold for stands in stark contrast to the single painting sold during his life.

Gift Shop

Your final stop on the tour will be the gift shop!

As you would expect, the store sells a wide variety of Van Gogh inspired items. From posters and postcards to face masks, you should pick up a small souvenir of your experience!

Is the Van Gogh Immersive Experience worth it?

The Van Gogh Immersive Experience is absolutely worth a visit! It is an incredibly moving celebration of Van Gogh’s art and does an amazing job of presenting it in a way like never before.

The flurry of immersive Van Gogh exhibitions across the globe has demonstrated the success of combining art and technology to create a totally unique experience.

Although I doubt we’re far from the end of traditional art galleries, it is clear to see that people are eager for new experiences. The clever combinations of audio and projection mapping have brought a whole new wave of appreciation for Van Gogh’s art, from audiences young and old.

I’m keen to see whether more experiences of this kind start appearing for other artists. It is absolutely an experience that was well worth the investment in a ticket, and I would happily experience again and again!
