I was recently invited to stay at a stunning holiday apartment in Luddenden. Luddenden is a charming village nestled in the Yorkshire Pennines.

Just a short distance from Hebden Bridge, Luddenden is one of the few villages in the area I haven’t visited. Little did I know what an enchanting gem I was missing out on!

If you are looking for a relaxing getaway in the heart of the Yorkshire countryside, you absolutely want to book a stay at this stunning two-bedroom holiday apartment in Luddenden.

Luddenden is a charming village in the Calder Valley in West Yorkshire. It is just 3.1 miles (5 km) west of Halifax. The name Luddenden means “Ludd valley” or “valley of the loud stream.” It refers to the brook that runs through the village.

Luddenden has a rich history dating back to the 13th century, when a corn mill was operating in the village. In the 17th century, the village prospered from the worsted industry, which involved spinning and weaving wool. Many of the buildings from this period still stand today. Such as the Grade II listed St Mary’s Church and the Lord Nelson pub.

Luddenden has also been used as one of the filming locations for the popular BBC drama series Happy Valley. The series follows the life of Catherine Cawood, a police sergeant dealing with personal and professional challenges in the Calder Valley. The village’s scenic and rural setting provides a contrast to the gritty and realistic portrayal of crime and violence in the show.

The Most Enchanting Holiday Apartment in Luddenden

When you arrive at Oats Royd Mill, you can’t help but be swept away by the history of the place. This once-thriving textile mill harks back to the industrial prowess of Luddenden.

Built at the height of England’s textile industry in 1847, Oats Royd Mill has seen the passage of time. It had survived the fluctuations of economic tides and the shift from traditional industry to digital innovation.

Today, Oats Royd Mill has been lovingly transformed into a collection of well-maintained apartments. While ensuring that the building’s industrial soul is preserved while providing modern comforts and amenities.

The mill’s imposing structure, with its characteristic stone facade, stands as a testament to the area’s past while offering a unique holiday experience.

Up on the top floor is a spectacular penthouse apartment that has been transformed into a breath-taking holiday let. It welcomes guests to the heart of the Calder Valley and provides a comfortable home base from which to explore the region.

First Impressions of this Holiday Apartment in Luddenden

When we stepped through the doorway into the apartment it was like stepping into a little haven. We were entering on a chilly December afternoon, as the sun was already beginning to fade. The apartment felt warm and inviting, but also a beautiful burst of colour on a grey December day.

In fact, the rain was falling throughout most of our stay and it didn’t make the slightest bit of difference. Even if the sun had been shining, it would have been a challenge to tear ourselves away from our beautiful retreat!

It is very unusual for me to spend much time in our accommodation when we’re travelling. I much prefer to be out and about exploring. However, as soon as we entered the apartment it instantly felt like a home away from home!

For a change, we used our escape as an opportunity to unwind and kick up our feet, in part, because we couldn’t quite bear to miss out on any time to enjoy this beautiful holiday home.

Highlights

With so many stunning details to this unforgettable holiday apartment, I want to call out some of my favourite highlights to share with you.

Each of these details is what makes the apartment feel so welcoming and inviting and made our stay feel so special.

Colour

One of my favourite things about the apartment was the incredible use of colour. The walls and floors of the rooms were neutral tones, but the decor throughout uses clever pops of colour in the form of rugs, blankets, artwork, and furniture. 

The bold combination of colour gives the apartment a high quality finish that feels really artistic and tasteful.

Even if you arrive on a dreary day like we did, you cannot help but smile as you open the door into this bright and bold space.

Cosy

Another thing I love about the apartment is that the rooms are all incredibly spacious while still feeling cosy. This is most evident in the vast combined living room and kitchen area. 

The space is cleverly divided into areas, including a kitchen and dining space, an entertainment space and a quiet nook.

By defining three smaller sections within the space, the room retains its big and airy feel, while also feeling cosy and welcoming.

Plus, the addition of multiple rugs, blankets, and cushions create a comfortable space to curl up and unwind. Whether that is watching TV, playing games, cooking, or simply reading a good book.

Comfort

Building on the welcoming, cosy feel, the apartment had an overall homely and comfortable vibe.

From the beds to the chairs and sofas, everything about the space is designed for the comfort of guests.

There were also plenty of additional details to help with this. Including heaters, extra blankets, and pretty much any other resource you can imagine to make your stay a comfortable one. 

Finishing Touches

One other detail I wanted to highlight is the incredible attention that has gone into the finishing touches in the apartment.

While a stay here feels cosy and homely, it also feels like a unique stay in an art gallery.

The combination of incredible artwork on the walls, to the little trinkets and knick knacks on the office desk are set out in a way that invites you to explore them in detail. It would be possible to spend your entire stay simply admiring each piece and taking them in!

These finishing touches cleverly combine the two homes of owners Jenay and Scott. There are little nods to this home in Yorkshire, including a miniature Terry’s chocolate truck on the desk. But also many items from their other home in South Africa.

You will find paintings of familiar Yorkshire landscapes hanging beside paintings of exotic African wildlife, and they have successfully blended the two seamlessly.

This combination and celebration of two unique cultures is what makes a stay in this holiday apartment truly special.

And finally, although a little bizarre to call out, the apartment smells amazing!

I don’t usually register the scent of accommodation when I walk in, but the whole apartment had a fresh, clean, and floral scent throughout, which really highlights the level of detail that goes into preparing the apartment.

Every one of the senses is considered, beyond just what we can see!

Amenities

Now we’ve explored my first impressions, here’s a more practical look at what is included in a stay at this holiday apartment in Luddenden, including the space and amenities on hand.

Entranceway

The front door to the apartment opens up straight into a room which is laid out as an office space. There is a desk and a chair in the centre of the room beneath a skylight which allows plenty of light into the room.

My favourite thing about this space is the impressive gallery wall with framed book pages which feature beautiful illustrations. Plus, the charming details on the desk including toy trucks and a letter opener amongst other details.

We didn’t utilise this space very much during our stay, but it remains one of my favourite rooms. This space really creates the gallery feel the most and sets the tone for the rest of the apartment.

If we had stayed longer, I would have loved to spend time working here, as it is a calm and tranquil retreat away from the rest of the apartment.

Hallway

Beyond the entrance is a long hallway which zigzags through the apartment. In most instances, hallways aren’t anything of particular note to write about. However, this is an obvious exception.

The hallway walls are covered in beautiful artwork. Rather than being simply a transition space leading from one room to the next, the hallway has been cleverly transformed into a feature of its own. 

As you move through the hallway it feels as though you are walking through an art gallery. The pieces all complement each other well. With so many on display, you can spend a good chunk of your stay admiring them all. 

Not only does this space tie the apartment together, but it makes moving around the space a real pleasure. It encourages you to explore the whole apartment, rather than simply spending all your time in the living room.

Bedroom and En Suite

The first bedroom along the corridor is a beautiful, airy room which features an en suite bathroom.

This bedroom has an L-shaped layout, and as you enter the room you immediately face a comfortable double bed. Then, tucked around the corner, there is a sofa, wardrobe, and small workspace.

Despite the layout of this room, it has been thoughtfully laid out to make the most of the space. I especially like the workspace tucked away, as it feels like a cosy little nook, ideal for a productive escape from the rest of the house.

The wardrobe is also surprisingly spacious, with room to store your luggage including your suitcase if you like to tuck it out of the way.

On the practical side of things, the bedroom includes comfortable bedding plus additional pillows and blankets. Also included is a camp bed, which is ideal if you have children visiting with you. Plus the additional seating with the sofa, which is great if you want a private retreat with some space away.

There are also additional items for your comfort including towels, a clothes airer, a hairdryer, and clothes hangers.

The bathroom includes a spacious shower, sink and toilet, plus essentials such as hand soap, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, body lotion, and a good supply of toilet rolls.

Both the bedroom and en suite are stunning and beautifully decorated. We didn’t stay in this room but I often found myself wandering in simply to admire the artwork and the decor!

Master Bedroom

The second bedroom along the corridor was the one we chose to stay in. This spacious room was brightly lit by three skylight windows.

The room features a double bed, a charming pink sofa, plenty of built-in storage, a chest of drawers, bedside table, and a dressing table with a mirror.

It is a cosy room with plenty of plush rugs and furnishings. Plus, it has plenty of storage available to stash your luggage, including your suitcase.

The bed was extremely comfortable and the room has a connecting door to the main bathroom.

Bathroom

The main bathroom in the apartment adjoins the master bedroom, but can also be accessed independently from the hallway.

This bathroom features a large bath, which is essential for me because I love unwinding in a hot bath when we are on holiday. Especially after long days of walking! 

The bathroom is quite long and narrow, well laid out, with plenty of storage space for toiletries during your stay. Plus, there were some essentials on hand including shower gel, shampoo and conditioner in case you forget anything.

This was another bright room featuring lots of natural lighting from the window. And, as throughout the entire apartment, it was beautifully finished with wonderful prints and flowers to add a pop of colour and tie it in.

Kitchen

The largest space in the apartment is the entertainment space which is set up as an open-plan living and kitchen/dining space.

Although this space is vast, it still feels comfortable and inviting and has everything you will need for the duration of your stay.

The kitchen space features a washing machine, dishwasher, utensils, crockery, pots, microwave, and cooker. Plus, washing up supplies, detergent, a toaster, a fridge freezer, coffee machine, and kettle. As well as a thoughtful selection of teas, coffees, a bottle of milk in the fridge, and we were even treated to a cake waiting for us on the table! 

And speaking of the table, the dining space has a table and six chairs, so there is plenty of room for everyone during the stay.

This well stocked kitchen is perfect if you prefer to cook your own food during your stay. There is adequate space to store and prepare your food, as well as all the tools you require for cooking.

We used the space a lot for breakfast and lunch preparations, although we did travel out for our evening meals as a treat!

Living Room

Alongside the kitchen and dining area is the living room space. Just like the kitchen, this is well stocked with loads of features for a comfortable stay.

There is plenty of seating available with two sofas, two armchairs, and two bean bag footstools. Plus, on a practical level, there are plenty of sockets, many of which feature USB outlets which are handy for charging phones.

A lot of thought has also gone into providing entertainment for your stay. This room contains a selection of books, games, jigsaws, plus a smart TV. So, if you encounter an afternoon rain shower or cold evening during your stay, you won’t get bored!

And of course, the room was excellently finished just as you would expect. My favourite feature amongst the many decor details was the string of fairy lights strung on the ceiling beams. This just added an extra touch of fun and cosiness to the atmosphere!

Other Things To Note

As well as mentioning each of the rooms, there are a handful of additional details I’d like to call out.

Firstly, the apartment itself is naturally light and airy. Most of the ceilings throughout are angled, so there are many skylight windows around the apartment which makes it bright.

However, for darker evenings, there are lamps on hand to brighten up the rooms. There are so many lamps in fact, that each evening James and I turned it into a game of tracking them down to make sure they were switched off before bed.

I actually counted the lamps throughout the entire apartment before we left and there are…21! So, you can be confident that no matter what time of year you visit, the apartment will be bright and inviting!

As well as an abundance of lamps, there were so many sockets throughout the apartment. This was ideal as I was travelling with my laptop, phone, camera, as well as many other electrical devices and I didn’t need to rely on my travel adapter to plug everything in.

There were also lots of artificial plants and flowers throughout the apartment which gave a pleasant touch of greenery. Many of these didn’t even look artificial! I was actually inspired by the many artificial plants and have since bought some for my own home too!

Also, there were additional bits and pieces on hand to ensure we had a comfortable stay, including heaters, a vacuum, and ironing board. Plus, there was a guest book where we left some comments and enjoyed reading about the experience of other visitors.

Overall, the apartment is beautifully furnished and is maintaned to a really high standard. It is such a special place to stay and a wonderful retreat into the spectacular surroundings of the Calder Valley.

The best holiday apartment in Luddenden

I’ll be honest, tearing yourself away from this haven is no easy task! But if you can bear to part for just a few hours during your stay, here are some of the best things to do near Luddenden on your visit.

Visit Hebden Bridge

Just a stone’s throw from Luddenden is the lively town of Hebden Bridge, a must-visit destination for anyone staying in the area.

Nestled between steep wooded valleys, Hebden Bridge is teeming with charm and a unique, vibrant energy that is hard to resist.

The town is well-known for its quirky, independent shops, offering everything from antiques to locally made crafts. The arts scene here is particularly vibrant, with regular events hosted at the Hebden Bridge Picture House and the Trades Club, an internationally renowned music venue.

Nature lovers won’t be disappointed either. The town is surrounded by the stunning countryside of the Calder Valley, offering countless opportunities for walks and cycle routes.

If you are looking for a scenic and historic walk in the Calder Valley, you might want to consider visiting Heptonstall, a charming village perched on a hilltop above Hebden Bridge. 

Heptonstall dates back to the 13th century and has a rich history of weaving and mining. You can explore its cobbled streets, old churches, and quaint cottages, as well as enjoy stunning views of the valley below.

One of the best ways to reach Heptonstall is by walking from Hebden Bridge. The walk is less than one mile and it takes you up a steep but rewarding climb.

Along the way, you can admire the architecture of the old mills and bridges, spot wildlife and wildflowers, and learn about the local history and legends.

The walk to Heptonstall from Hebden Bridge is a great activity for people visiting the Calder Valley, as it offers a combination of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and rural charm. It is suitable for walkers of all abilities, but the steepness of the climb may prove challenging for some. So, be sure to take the route at your own pace.

Explore Hardcastle Crags

Another great place to visit if you are staying in Luddenden is Hardcastle Crags. Hardcastle Crags is a National Trust owned woodland that covers over 400 acres and has more than 15 miles of footpaths.

You can enjoy the stunning scenery, the diverse wildlife, the historic Gibson Mill, and the hidden Lumb Hole Falls. Hardcastle Crags is especially beautiful in autumn, when the leaves turn golden and create a magical atmosphere.

Hardcastle Crags is only a short drive away from Luddenden. You can park at either Clough Hole Car Park or Midgehole Car Park.

Alternatively, you can take a bus from Luddenden to Hebden Bridge, and then walk along the quiet country lane or the scenic riverside path to Hardcastle Crags. The walk from Hebden Bridge to Hardcastle Crags is about 2 miles and takes around 30 to 40 minutes.

Whether you are looking for a gentle stroll or a challenging hike, Hardcastle Crags has something for everyone. You can choose from various trails that vary in length and difficulty, or combine them to create your own route.

You can also visit Gibson Mill, a former cotton mill that is now a museum and a cafe. The mill is powered by renewable energy and has no connection to the national grid. You can learn about the history of the mill and the valley, and enjoy some refreshments in the cafe.

The falls are a stunning sight, especially after heavy rain. You can admire the cascading water and the moss-covered rocks.

Hardcastle Crags and Lumb Hole Falls are great places to visit in the Calder Valley, and a perfect destination for nature lovers. It offers an opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and immerse yourself in the tranquil woodland.

Meet the West Yorkshire Alpacas

If you are staying at the Oats Royd Mill apartment in Luddenden, you have a great opportunity to experience one of the most unique and fun activities in the Calder Valley: alpaca walking at West Yorkshire Alpacas.

Alpacas are adorable and gentle animals that will make your walk more enjoyable and memorable. The experience lasts for approximately one house, and you will walk along scenic routes with stunning views of the countryside.

You will also learn more about these fascinating creatures and their history, as well as get to feed and cuddle them.

West Yorkshire Alpacas is located less than a mile down the road from the apartment in Luddenden. The walk from Oats Royd Mill to West Yorkshire Alpacas is about 25 minutes. However, please keep in mind that there are no footpaths for substantial sections of the walk so please take care if you choose to arrive on foot.

Alpaca walking is a great activity for all ages and abilities, and it is suitable in any weather. You will need to book in advance, as the walks are very popular and fill up quickly.

Walk Around Luddenden

If you are staying in Luddenden, don’t miss the opportunity to take a stroll around this picturesque village. Luddenden has a rich history and stunning natural scenery that will make you fall in love with this place.

Some of the highlights include:

• Stunning views over the valley, where you can admire the rolling hills, the green fields, and the quaint cottages that dot the landscape.
• The historic pub and church, both of which are Grade II listed and date back to the 17th century. The pub, The Lord Nelson, is said to be haunted by the ghost of a former landlord. The church, St Mary’s, has a beautiful stained glass window and a carved wooden screen.
• The impressive river, which flows through the village.
• And of course, your home for your stay, Oats Royd Mill, former textile mill. The mill is a striking example of Victorian architecture and engineering, and has a distinctive chimney that towers over the village.

Please note that there are no shops in the village, so you will need to bring your own snacks and drinks. However, the pub and the church are open to visitors and offer refreshments and information.

The village is a pretty place to explore and a charming walk to pass one to two hours. The walk from Oats Royd Mill to the village is downhill, but the return walk uphill can be steep. Wear comfortable shoes and you may want to bring a walking stick if you have one.

The walk is suitable for all ages and abilities, but there is no footpath in some areas so you will need to walk on the road in places. Fortunately, traffic is usually minimal, but please be cautious at all times.

Shop in Halifax

If you are craving some retail therapy, Halifax is a great place to shop in the Calder Valley. 

The drive distance from Luddenden to Halifax is approximately 5 miles. There are several parking options available in Halifax, including pay and display car parks on Discovery Road (HX1 2NE) and The Woolshops Shopping Centre (HX1 1AA).

If you find yourself in Halifax, don’t miss out on exploring the charming independent boutique stores nestled within The Piece Hall.

This historic Grade I listed building was originally constructed as a hub for handloom weavers to showcase and sell their intricately crafted woollen cloth “pieces.”

Today, The Piece Hall boasts a diverse array of independent shops offering a delightful assortment of gifts, homewares, clothing, and many other treasures waiting to be discovered.

Discover Haworth

Haworth is a beautiful village, famous for its literary heritage and scenic landscape. It is only a short drive away from Luddenden, making it an ideal choice for a day trip.

Just a short drive from Luddenden, Hebden Bridge is a town bustling with eateries and cafes.

Hebden Bridge is a town bustling with popular cafes. I love indulging in a slice of cake and a hot drink after a stroll around the shops. And my favourite cafe to visit is Lovegrows Tearooms. The serve delicious, homemade cakes and sandwiches throughout the day with very generous helpings. It’s a lovely spot to sit back and unwind after a day on your feet!

Nizza Pizza is an Italian and Mediterranean restaurant serving authentic and tasty pizzas, pastas, salads, and desserts. You can choose from a range of toppings, sauces, and cheeses, and customise your pizza to your liking. 

Nelson’s Wine Bar is a hidden gem at the heart of Hebden Bridge. This plant-based wine bar, restaurant, and venue offers an inclusive space for everyone. Situated in the basement of the historic Co-op building, Nelsons has been an integral part of the town’s fabric since 1997. Originally a vegetarian wine bar, Nelsons has now transitioned to a 100% plant-based menu. Their commitment to quality seasonal ingredients sourced from local growers ensures that every dish is a delightful fusion of flair and creativity.

Just a short drive from Luddenden, Halifax is a great spot to head to for a delicious evening meal. Here are just a few of the best places to eat in Halifax that you might want to try on your visit.

Restaurant at Shibden Mill Inn

This cosy and award-winning restaurant offers a variety of dishes made from local and seasonal ingredients. I can see why it was recently voted one of the most romantic restaurants in the UK! James and I have dined here to celebrate Valentine’s day in the past and it is a cosy and romantic setting perfect for couples.

Julio’s

During our stay, James and I decided to try out somewhere new to dine. Julio’s Italian Restaurant is a culinary gem that stands out for several reasons. Nestled in the historic quarter, right under the White Swan Hotel and opposite the town hall, Julio’s offers an inviting and relaxed atmosphere for diners.

Julio’s has earned a reputation for serving excellent food consistently. Whether you’re craving classic Italian dishes like pizzas and pastas or want to indulge in their special creations, every dish is lovingly crafted to order in their kitchen.

The team at Julio’s ensures that guests feel welcome and well taken care of. From couples seeking a romantic meal to large parties celebrating special occasions, everyone receives professional and friendly service.

We were seriously impressed with the quality of the food during our visit. In fact, it saw us take on a full three courses each which is pretty unusual for us! There was nothing left on our plates and we’re already planning a return visit!

Spice Delight

If you’re like me and love Indian food, you’ll want to dine at Spice Delight. We first visited this restaurant in Halifax at the recommendation of some friends and we weren’t disappointed!

Spice Delight offers a delightful journey through Indian cuisine. From aromatic spices to rich curries, their menu is a celebration of authentic flavours that transport diners to the vibrant streets of India.

With a string of glowing reviews, Spice Delight has consistently impressed diners. Visitors rave about the well-balanced dishes, attentive service, and the warm ambiance that makes every meal memorable.

Whether you’re a meat lover or a vegetarian, Spice Delight caters to all palates. Their extensive menu includes both meat and vegetarian options, ensuring everyone finds a dish to enjoy.

The Victorian

Although not a food stop, while you are in Halifax, don’t miss the opportunity to indulge in a drink at The Victorian!

The Victorian Craft Beer Café is a must-visit for beer enthusiasts. Situated near the Victoria Theatre and a short walk from the iconic Piece Hall, this establishment is a temple to beer.

Plus, if you appreciate a good dram, The Victorian has you covered. Their single malt whisky selection is unrivalled in the area.

The Robin Hood Inn in Pecket Well

And finally, here’s a final dining recommendation that is perfect if you’re looking for a quaint country pub tucked away from the crowds.

The Robin Hood Inn is a 17th-century coaching inn that serves traditional pub food and local ales in a cosy and charming setting.

It is located in Pecket Well, a small hilltop village that offers stunning views of the Shibden Valley and the Stoodley Pike monument.

The inn is a short, picturesque drive from Luddenden, assuming you’re not visiting on a night like ours when we were enveloped in thick fog along the winding hilltop road!

The Robin Hood Inn is a perfect place to dine for people who want to enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of the Yorkshire countryside. We indulged in a delicious early Christmas dinner during our December stay. The quality of the food was excellent! And, my personal favourite, the cheese board, was exceptional!

Our Experience of Luddenden

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Luddenden and I wish it had lasted longer!

I am so glad I had the opportunity to appreciate the unspoiled beauty of Luddenden for a few days and to truly immerse myself in this hidden gem.

I’ve learned that Luddenden, with its quiet charm and picturesque scenery, is the perfect retreat for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Our stay at this beautiful holiday apartment offered more than just a place to unwind; it served as the quintessential home base from which to explore the storied nooks and enchanting crannies of the region.

Waking up to stunning valley views each morning was a gentle reminder of the grandeur that lay just outside our door.

Discovering this hidden gem of Luddenden not only promises a tranquil getaway but also an opportunity to create memories in a place where time seems to stand still.

A stay in the Calder Valley is more than a mere tick on your bucket list; it’s an experience that will enrich your soul and perhaps, enchantingly, call you back time and time again.
