Alpaca Walking in West Yorkshire: Our Uniquely Local Experience
Uniquely Local have so many experiences to choose from, so no matter what you pick, you won’t be disappointed! For me, as soon as I saw the words ‘Alpaca Walk,’ I knew that was right up my street!
As someone who loves animals and loves being outdoors, this sounded like the perfect combo! Plus, I have a soft spot for those adorable, fluffy creatures!
In fact, I was already eyeing up the alpaca walking experience as a gift, so I jumped at the opportunity to try it out!
What is Alpaca Walking?
Alpaca walking is exactly as it sounds – heading out on a short walk with a real-life alpaca!
You can enjoy this unique opportunity to get up close and personal with these adorable creatures. Plus, you get an insight into each of their cheeky personalities!
What is included in the Uniquely Local Alpaca Walking Experience?
Our Uniquely Local Alpaca Walking Experience took us to West Yorkshire Alpacas, where we had the opportunity to get to know the six cheeky chaps who live there!
We started off with an introduction to the alpacas in their field. We learned a little bit more about them as an animal, plus we got to meet Emperor, Freddie, Wigbert, Roman, Elton and Pierre and feed them some hay.
After we were all well acquainted, we headed up the hill and into the next field to the alpaca shack. Once in the shack, the alpacas were harnessed ready for their walk. Although a couple of tricksters managed to sneak their way out of the shack! However, they did wait patiently to be harnessed nonetheless!
Once secured, we set out on a short walk through the field, stopping occasionally to feed the alpacas granola. We had six hungry teenage boys on our hands so plenty of food stops were essential!
I had the opportunity to walk Elton. Or should I say, Elton had the opportunity to walk me!
He’s a natural leader and always wants to be at the front of the pack, so I spent quite a bit of time trying to keep up with his spritely skip!
Once we were in the final field and out of food the alpacas had their harnesses removed. We left them in their final location, basking and rolling in the sun.
The whole experience lasted about an hour. We had a fantastic time, and it was an incredible experience to see these lovely creatures up close!
It really was the perfect, unique experience for a Sunday afternoon. And it’s one we won’t forget in a hurry!

What do I need to know about Alpaca Walking?
The most important thing to know ahead of your alpaca walking experience is to dress appropriately for the weather! This experience is outdoors so you will need windproof and waterproof outdoor wear, as well as suitable shoes for walking through muddy fields.
I also learned that alpacas are messy eaters! Expect to find yourself covered in hay and granola off casts! So, be prepared to put everything into the wash as soon as you get home!
Another thing to note is that, contrary to belief, alpacas rarely spit at people. So, if that’s putting you off, don’t let it! Occasionally they spit at each other if they are arguing over food, but even that isn’t as bad as people think!
And finally, alpacas have such a fun personality! They are lively creatures who are very gentle and curious. They don’t particularly like to be handled and cuddled, but you can pet them gently on their necks. You won’t believe how soft and fluffy they are!
