Where is Saltaire?

Saltaire forms part of Shipley, a suburb of the city of Bradford. It is located in West Yorkshire in the north of England. It is about 3 hours by train or a 4-hour drive from London, and about the same distance from Edinburgh.

History Of Saltaire

The village was built in 1851 by Sir Titus Salt, who was a prominent businessman in the Yorkshire woollen industry. He chose the site alongside the Leeds and Liverpool canal for his 5 mills and for rows of houses for his workers. The quality of housing in Saltaire was a significant improvement on the worker’s previous dwellings in the slums of Bradford.

Alongside housing, Salt built a hospital, community centre, school and church. He was an advocate for recreation and encouraged a sense of community within the Saltaire workers. The site was considered a landmark in 19th-century urban planning.

In 2001 Saltaire was recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Because of this, the village is protected and the buildings within the model village are individually listed. When you visit Saltaire, you’ll see why this site is worthy of protection and celebration.

When visiting Saltaire, you need to factor in some time to appreciate the impressive architecture. Here are just a few of the beautiful buildings you will want to take a look at.

Saltaire United Reformed Church

Towards the canal on Victoria Road, you can’t miss the impressive United Reformed Church. This striking circular structure was the first public building Salt commissioned for the village. He donated the land and paid for the cost of the church personally.

Victoria Hall was originally designed by Salt as a community and educational centre. It contained a library, gym, laboratory and two art rooms, which could all be used as part of a quarterly membership subscription. Today, the venue is host to various events and concerts throughout the year.

The Salt Building

The Salt Building was originally built as a school for the children of the community. At the time, the education of children was not provided by local or national governments. The education tradition continues today, as the building is used by Shipley College.

You can find Victoria Hall and The Salt Building positioned opposite each, partway down Victoria Road as you walk away from the canal.

  2. What an interesting place that I’ve never heard of! I absolutely love it when old buildings are repurposed but they still honor their industrial history. This looks like such a cool place and has everything. I’ll admit, I’m tempted by the bakery but also love the sculpture trail.

    • It’s so cool to still see these pieces of history but with a modern purpose! I think Saltaire is a really good exampke of somewhere that has honoured the original purposes of the buildings but made them relevant for the modern community. It is a fascinating place! I have to admit, I visit the bakery every time I go…I can’t resist! You might as well stop by to pick up some fuel for walking the sculpture trail!
