Puttstars Mini Golf

Puttstars consists of three nine-hole mini golf courses; Zig Zag, Slingshot and Pinball. We played two of the three courses on our visit, Slingshot and Pinball. You don’t need to select your courses at the time of booking, we simply booked to play two games then choose the courses that looked the most enticing as we started our round.

Each course took the two of us around 30 minutes to complete. The venue was quiet when we visited so we weren’t held up much by other players. If you are playing as a larger group or with young children, you will want to factor in extra time per course. With the maximum group size of six players, you will want to allow approximately one hour to complete the course.

On the surface, Puttstars appears to be like any other indoor mini golf course you expect to find. Each of the courses is made up of fun, brightly coloured obstacles obscuring the holes you are aiming to reach. Some of the most stand-out holes we loved include an impressive replica of the Golden Gate Bridge, a rotating carousel, and a giant roulette table.

How to play Puttstars Mini Golf

What sets Puttstars York apart from other mini golf courses is its unique and interactive approach to scoring. Rather than tracking the number of putts and the lowest score winning, Puttstars converts the number of putts on each hole into points. At the end of the game, the player with the highest score wins.

To track the putts, you are given a unique code as part of your booking. At each hole, type this code into the tablet provided. Here, you will have the opportunity to log the number of putts for each player on the previous hole and this will be used to track your score.

The very first tablet on the course walks you through how to play in easy steps. The tablets are easy to use and prompt you so the process isn’t overwhelming. On the last hole, your golf ball will be retained, and you can enter your final scores to discover the winner.

This innovative way of scoring made the game much more competitive! If you scored a bad result on one hole, the points scoring system makes it much easier to make up the difference on other holes than the traditional scoring method. This kept our scores pretty close throughout, which made the gameplay more exciting!

And to add to the excitement, each player gets two jokers per game. If you choose to play a joker on a specific hole, you will need to enter this before the hole is played. The joker doubles your score on that hole so, if played wisely, you can really rack up some extra points!

The use of the tablet scoring system and jokers makes the game much more interactive than many mini golf courses and adds to the excitement and competition of the game. It is a fun and unique way of playing that I really loved!

Food and Drinks at Puttstars

Puttstars has a whole lot more than just mini golf on offer. If you want to pick up some food on your visit, Puttstars has a classic diner menu.

Choose your selection from pizzas, hot dogs or sides and shares including nachos, stuffed jalapeños, and halloumi sticks. You can opt for a full meal or simply some nibbles to fuel your putting. Kids menus are also available.

Bar at Puttstars York

There is plenty of seating reserved for dining, so it is the perfect place to stop for a snack once you have completed a round or two.

Puttstars also has an in-house bar. Here you can choose from a selection of teas and coffees, soft drinks, and milkshakes. Or, if your occasion calls for something stronger, they also offer a fantastic range of beers, wines, and cocktails.

You can see the full menu of food and drink on their website.

Other things to do at Puttstars

For a truly entertaining visit, you can take advantage of the other things to do at Puttstars while you are there. You will find a host of amusements and arcade machines on offer which are fun for all ages. The collection includes racing games, coin pushers, claw machines and more.

Also, Puttstars is conveniently located above Hollywood Bowl. So, if your round of golf doesn’t go your way, why not prove your skills on the lanes instead while you are there?

Is Puttstars York worth visiting?

Puttstars York is absolutely worth visiting! Thanks to the combination of fun and interactive courses, plus an excellent selection of food and drinks, Puttstars was the ideal date night activity for us! It is a family friendly venue which makes it an ideal indoor activity to do in York with kids, especially if they are slightly older. Overall, it’s a fun day out for everyone, no matter what your age!

James and I will certainly be returning for another round or two sometime soon! I am also keen to visit other Puttstars venues, including the one in Leeds.
