What is Treasure Hunt York?

Treasure Hunt York is an interactive treasure hunt around York city centre. You will be guided through the streets of York and encouraged to keep your eyes open to spot the answers to the riddles provided by your host.

You follow the route outlined through clear instructions and maps from one destination to the next to see some of the best York sights has to offer.

You can enjoy the route at your own pace, so if you want to pause at a coffee shop to refuel, you can do! You don’t need to download or print anything, you simply need a mobile data connection, click the link in your booking email and you are ready to go!

You will follow a carefully curated route that will guide you past iconic York highlights such as York Minster, while also introducing you to some of the lesser-known gems in the city centre too. Along the way, you will be provided with fun facts about the places you spot.

Treasure Hunt York is your own private tour of York, with the excitement of a treasure hunt thrown in!

How do you play Treasure Hunt York?

Treasure Hunt York is played via an online chat messenger. Your guide is Captain Bess who will share maps and clues with you via the messenger along your journey.

The game uses a combination of beautifully illustrated maps, written directions, and clues to guide you on your route. Both the maps and the written instructions are clear and easy to follow.

If you do find you’ve wandered in the wrong direction, you can simply retrace your steps back to the last clue and re-read the instructions to make sure you end up in the right place.

In areas where there might be obstructions (such as locked gates), an alternative route is available so you don’t get stuck anywhere!

How To Play Treasure Hunt York

To interact with the game, you simply type your answers to the clues into the messenger. You will be told if your answer is correct or if you need to take another look. If your answer is right, you will be given your next direction.

If you get stuck at all, you can request a hint to help you solve the puzzle. It is worth noting that Google is unlikely to help you with the answers so don’t waste your time trying to look them up online!

What do I need to know before I go?

Probably my favourite thing about Treasure Hunt York was just how thorough the information was that they provide you with before you start your adventure. I’m the kind of person who loves to know exactly what to expect before I try something new and boy, did they deliver!

Once you book Treasure Hunt York, you are provided with a detailed breakdown of all of the information you could possibly want to know.

This includes:

  • The exact starting location for your treasure hunt including a link to Google Maps.
  • The time to start your Treasure Hunt and any access restrictions such as opening times.
  • The time of sunset on your chosen date to make sure you don’t get caught out in the dark!
  • Suggested spots for a break or picnic during your adventure.
  • The closest toilets on the route and if you need to pay to use them.
  • What to do if you have technical difficulties.
  • What to bring with you i.e. charging brick, comfy shoes, etc.
  • Top tips for playing the game to make the most of your experience.

In fact, the information provided was so thorough, all I had to do was find a place to park and we were good to go! As a thorough pre-travel researcher, it made a refreshing change for someone else to do all of the hard work!

How difficult is Treasure Hunt York?

We found that York Treasure Hunt was just the right level of challenging. When looking for clues, we had to hunt around a bit as the answer wasn’t too obvious so it had a real scavenger hunt feel.

At the same time, the clues weren’t overly difficult so you found yourself getting frustrated. With a bit of careful thinking and thorough searching, you can suss out the answers.

Our number one tip is to read the clues carefully though! We got caught up in the excitement and were trying to rush ahead which meant that we kept answering one question wrong. It was nothing to do with the question itself, we just hadn’t read it properly and that was obvious when the answer was revealed!

How long does Treasure Hunt York take?

The whole adventure should take approximately 90-180 minutes to complete. However, there is no restriction on the time, so if you want to pause for a picnic or to admire an attraction, you can do so without it impacting your gameplay.

James and I completed Treasure Hunt York in just under 90 minutes, but we did have the advantage of being familiar with York so we were able to quickly navigate the route from one location to the next. If you have tiny pirates in your crew, you might find it takes a little longer!

Is Treasure Hunt York suitable for families?

And on the topic of tiny pirates, you might be wondering if Treasure Hunt York is suitable for families. If you’re looking for things to do in York with kids, then Treasure Hunt York is ideal!

The interactive nature of the game is perfect to excite kids and keep them engrossed in the unfolding plot. The game is designed for children aged 8 and up. Younger children can play but might need extra help reading and understanding the pirate lingo!

The majority of the trail is accessible, and where there are steps, a step-free alternative is provided. So if your little one needs a pushchair to make it round the whole route, you won’t miss out!

Is Treasure Hunt York suitable for couples?

James and I played the game together and in our opinion, it is one of the best things to do in York for couples! It was a great way for us to blow away the cobwebs as the lockdown restrictions eased. After three months indoors, we were ready for some fresh air and an excuse to engage our brains!

It definitely helps that the clues are not frustratingly difficult. You’re not in danger of a domestic in the centre of York while arguing over an answer! It was a fun way to work together and enjoy an activity outside of the home for a change!

In fact, Treasure Hunt York is ideal for anyone looking for a fun day out in York, whether it is as a family, couple, or a group of friends looking for an outdoor activity that you can enjoy while still maintaining social distancing.

Why Treasure Hunt York?

If you are looking for unique things to see in York, Treasure Hunt York is perfect. On this treasure hunt, the reward isn’t buried at the end, but it is what you discover at each stop on your journey.

The trail is made up of 11 clues and the answer to each one can be found by identifying a unique York landmark that you’ve likely never noticed before!

But if these 11 discoveries weren’t rewarding enough, the trail takes you off the high street and into some of York city centre’s secret corners to show you some hidden gems you’ll be amazed you never knew about!

So if the engaging and interactive gameplay isn’t enough to convince you to give Treasure Hunt York a try, I promise that the discoveries along the way are well worth the investment. I’ve always loved York but this trail gave me a unique opportunity to see it through new eyes!

Ending the game

When you solve the last clue and the game ends, you are provided with a link to your Captain’s Log.

This fun souvenir features a map that outlines your route. Plus, it provides links to more information about some of the places you visit on your journey. It also tells you the time you took to complete the treasure hunt and your score – but don’t worry, your score is just for fun!

The Captain’s Log is also emailed to the address you used to sign up. I think this memento is a great digital keepsake of your trip. I especially like the fact that you can learn more about the places you saw on the route. Not only is the adventure fun, but it is a great way to learn more about some of York’s highlights!

The final verdict

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our Treasure Hunt York experience! The game was engaging, the storyline was well written and the clues were just the right combination of challenging and fun. But our favourite thing about the game was seeing small details of York that we had never noticed before.

We were amazed at how many new places we discovered, despite having visited York hundreds of times before! It really goes to show that no matter how well you think you know a place, there is always more to learn!

In our opinion, Treasure Hunt York is one of the best things to do in York city centre if you’re wanting a fun group activity and a unique York experience.
