As much as I dislike flying, as a bibliophile, hours and hours of uninterrupted reading time sounds like a dream! Whether you’re a regular reader or not, many of us will pick up a book as a means of passing time on long flights.
When you choose the right book, you are transported to faraway lands, meet new friends, and get lost in adventures. A good book makes you forget you are confined in a plane hurtling through the skies! But how do you choose the right books to read on a long flight?

When it comes to finding the perfect books to read on a long flight, there are certain criteria a good book needs to meet. Firstly, it needs to hook you instantly so you’re drawn in and really get lost in the pages. Secondly, it needs to be an ‘easy’ read in the sense that it carries you along with the plot and the characters so that you can’t put it down.
If you find the perfect combination of these things, you’ll easily find yourself lost in the book and your journey will literally, and figuratively, fly by!

In the past, if we wanted a new book for our journey, we’d grab a copy from the bookstore or at the airport before our flight. However, modern technology means that we can enjoy reading and even listening to books in different formats on the go, easier than ever before. So before you pick your book, here are the different types of books to read on a long flight.
Paperback Books
Paperback books are what we’ve travelled with for years. As a traditional book lover, you’ll still find me flying with a paperback or two in my bag! If you can, avoid travelling with hardback books as they are heavy and bulkier to carry.
If there is a new title that you are desperate to read on your flight and it is only available in hardback format, hold off buying it until you get to the airport. Many books publish what they call ‘airport editions.’ These are larger format paperback books, so are taller than your typical paperback, but are usually reserved for new titles sold exclusively in airports as publishers know that travellers don’t want to lug a hardback book around with them!
eBooks
Although paperback books are much easier to transport than hardbacks, eBooks allow you to travel with unlimited titles on just one device. So if you’re the kind of reader who likes to dabble in a few books at once (I’m guilty of this!) you can load your device with several titles before you travel, then pick and mix what you read on your flight.

Audio Books
If you’re not much of a reader, or you prefer listening to your titles instead of reading, you can download audiobooks ahead of your flight. I (unfortunately) still haven’t read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time, but I absolutely loved the play. I saw it with a friend while we were studying abroad in Ireland, and I knew nothing about it. Would definitely make a great read on a flight (or anytime).
It’s funny, I only actually got round to reading The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time recently (despite having it on my shelf for years!) and I absolutely loved it! It would be great reading for on a plane due to the short chapters and it is really easy to pick up and put down. But I agree, definitely one to enjoy any time! It’s a wonderful book, I’d love to see the play!

A Kindle is definitely a handy way to pack lots of books for a long flight! Typically I still default to a physical book but more ebooks and audiobooks are starting to creep into my life! That’s an eclectic list with something for everyone. Two of my travelling companions always read a book set in their next destination. I have fond memories of sussing out sites in Quebec City mentioned by Louise Penney in one of her Inspector Gamache novels. We ended up uncovering some gems we wouldn’t have visited otherwise. It ended up being an enjoyable treasure hunt.

Fantastic list you’ve put together! I used to always read on flights but recently have just started watching Netflix instead. I like reading physical books rather than ebooks so it was to make more space in my luggage. Great Expectations is a great choice though for a long haul flight!
I’m so glad you like the list! I love a physical book too and I always travel with two – a fiction one and a non-fiction one so I can choose which takes my fancy. I’m not much of a film and TV watcher so I’m happy to sacrifice the space but they do compromise your carry on! I hope you find some good books to read from the list!
Great list! I love all of the Harry Potter books, I could definitely read all of those on a flight! And Great Expectations is my favourite Charles Dickens book as well. I’m looking forward to checking out some of your other suggestions.
